  2. Prior Learning Assessment Recognition (PLAR)/PREP
  3. Polysomnography… Fall program start date October 14th,  2007
  4. Cardiac Diagnostics…projected program start date TBD, winter 2008
  5. Respiratory Therapy Integration,,, projected launch date Fall 2008
  6. An option for training in assisting in Anesthesia is under development/discussion… projected launch date winter 2008

For more detailed descriptions of each training option, click on the appropriate link. Each link has general information.  The links for PREP, Polysomnography  and Cardiac Diagnostics contain the Program of Studies and Admission  requirements.

The project options of Anesthesia Assisting and Respiratory Therapy Integration are in development.  As further information becomes available it will be posted on this site.

Basic Description of Training Options:

1.           PREP: Preparation for Regulated Employment Program for Respiratory Therapists:

This option assists health practitioners with a foreign credential in Respiratory Therapy or an equivalent (as determined by the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario) to prepare to challenge the Canadian national credential exams.  This program may also be of interest to Canadian educated individuals who were not successful in challenging the credential exams and would benefit from additional preparation, or for individuals whose registration has lapsed and who are eligible to rewrite the exams.

It is a customized plan of studies comprised of courses that individuals elect to take in preparing for the CSRT credential exams for Respiratory Therapists.  Courses combine self study with guided faculty assistance components.

2.           PLAR/PREP Prior Learning Assessment Recognition

This option is for individuals that require validation of equivalent knowledge and skills in Respiratory Therapy to the Canadian standards.  In partnership with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario, individuals are identified and assessed by written, simulated skills assessment and clinical skills assessment.  An individual that has successfully demonstrated equivalent knowledge and skills to Canadian standards can enter into the PREP option, to access remedial courses as recommended following their assessment. The courses recommended for all individuals with foreign training are Respiratory Therapy Legalities and Applied Mechanical Ventilation Review.  Upon completion of remedial courses, individuals may then challenge the CSRT credential exams.

This option assists health practitioners to obtain current theoretical knowledge and practical skills to conduct sleep studies so as to assist physicians in the diagnosis and management of sleep disorders. This program is a combination of theory, simulated laboratory practice and clinical experience.

This option assists health practitioners to obtain current theoretical knowledge and practical skills to conduct cardiac diagnostic studies so as to assist physicians in the diagnosis of cardiac disorders. This program is a combination of theory, simulated laboratory practice and clinical experience.

Admissions Requirements:

There are specific requirements for each option, however, in general these training options are available only to individuals with prior education in a health care field such as physicians, respiratory therapists, nurses, electrocardiogram technologists, and advanced paramedics.  Individuals with other health care training may be considered on an individual basis upon approval of the program coordinator.

Applicants must undertake an Algonquin College administered test of the Canadian Language Benchmark Test (CLBT) for which a fee of $40.00 will be charged. If English is a second language, test scores may result in a further requirement to undertake English as Second Language training either before or during the program at the discretion of the College. A Canadian English Language Benchmark of 8 minimum in all four sections of reading, writing, speaking and listening is a requirement for entry to these program options.  The

CLBT score must be current within 6 months of program application.

  • Proof of current Medical and Immunization Certificate
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support training (BCLS Level C)

Note:  Successful completion of clinical placement is a requirement for graduation for this program.  If you have been convicted of an offence under the criminal code for which you have not been pardoned, you will be unable to participate in clinical placements.  If you register in the program and have a criminal record for which you have not been pardoned, you must be aware that you will not be able to meet the program requirements for graduation.

Agencies that provide clinical placement for this program require students to have a clear Police Records Check for Service with the Vulnerable Sector. To be eligible to participate in clinical placement, you must submit proof of a clear Police Records Check for Service with the Vulnerable Sector at the start of each year of the program.  It must be renewed every 12 months during the program, must be submitted to the Program Department and must remain clear.

You will be required to disclose all notations on your Police Records Check to the clinical placement agencies.  Your acceptance for clinical placement is at the discretion of the clinical agency.  Should you wish further information, please contact your Program Chair.

It is your responsibility to obtain the Police Records Check from your local Police Department prior to the deadlines identified and to pay any associated costs.  It may take a significant length of time to obtain this documentation, (up to eight (8) weeks, or longer under exceptional circumstances); therefore you are urged to submit your applications as early as possible.
