Algonquin Men’s Basketball Bring Home National Bronze Medal

Monday March 23, 2009.  The Algonquin College Men’s Basketball Team will return from the CCAA National Championships hosted by the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) with a well earned Bronze Medal.  Algonquin defeated the host team UNBC 116-105 in the bronze medal game.

Algonquin jumped out to a 35-18 first quarter lead then out-scored UNBC by 9 points in the second quarter for a 73-47 half time lead.  Algonquin did survive a late push by UNBC in the forth quarter to solidify the bronze medal. 

OCAA Player of the Year Charly Spurr led Algonquin with 30 points going 5/8 beyond the 3 point arch. Other notables for Algonquin were; Anthony Hinds and Abdul Kosar both with 18 points, and Jordan Rose 15 points.

Algonquin College Men’s Volleyball head to Alberta for Nationals

Tuesday March 10, 2009.  – The Algonquin College Men’s Volleyball team will represent the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) along with Seneca College at the 2009 Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Volleyball Nationals hosted by Keyano College in Fort McMurray, Alberta from March 12-14.The four day event kicks off on Wednesday, March 11 with the CCAA All Canadian Awards Banquet and play begins on Thursday, March 12 at 2:00 pm (EST) and continues through Saturday, March 14.The Algonquin Thunder come into the championship as the third seed after winning the Provincial Championship for the second time in 3 years with a 3-0 victory over the Seneca Sting in the Championship final at Durham College on February 27-28. Algonquin will start the tournament against the sixth seed University of the Frazer Valley of British Columbia.

Algonquin College set to host the OCAA Men’s Basketball Championships

Thursday, March 5, 2009 -  The Algonquin College Students’ Association is the proud host of the 2009 Belair Direct Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Men’s Basketball Championships. This Championship will showcase the elite four Men’s Collegiate Basketball programs in the province, as they compete in a two day tournament commencing Friday, March 6th and concluding on Saturday, March 7th.

The Championships will open on Thursday, March 5th with the OCAA Men’s Basketball Awards Banquet were athletes, teams, and coaches will be honoured for their accomplishments throughout the regular season.

Algonquin's Max Larrivee Named Men's East Region Coach of the Year

Max LFriday February 27, 2009 - The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) is pleased to announce the Men’s and Women’s Volleyball League awards, announced Thursday evening at the OCAA Final Four Championship Banquet, presented by Belair Direct Insurance.

Among the winners was Algonquin Men’s Head Coach Max Larrivee.  Coach Larrivee was named the Men’s East Region Coach of the Year and was also nominated by the OCAA to be its choice for Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Coach of the Year.  Larrivee has guided his team to a 17-1 regular season record and has his eyes on a second OCAA Gold Medal this weekend at the OCAA Championships at Durham College.  His coaching resume is highlighted by an OCAA Gold Medal in 2007, Algonquin’s first since 1977, and a Bronze Medal at the CCAA National Championships in 2007.

Other award winners for Algonquin included Charlie Hamilton, Jonathan Sloane and Costa Solanakis were named Men’s East Region 1st Team All-Stars.  On the women’s side Ashlie Cormack and Heather Bannister were named Women’s East Region 1st Team All-Stars, while Skye Anderson and Melissa Groniger were named Women’s East Region 2nd Team All-Stars.

Algonquin College set to Host Men’s Basketball Quarter-Final Game

Thursday February 26, 2009.  The Algonquin College Students’ Association is proud to host an OCAA Quarter-Final Basketball game on Saturday February 28, 2009 at 7:00 pm.

The Algonquin College Thunder Men’s Basketball team (18-2) will host the Sheridan College Bruins (12-6) in a do or die match up in OCAA Quarter-Final action on Saturday at the Ron Port Athletic Facility (7:00 pm).  Algonquin was awarded a qualifying game bye while the Bruins had to play a qualifier against Cambrian College.  The Sheridan Bruins knocked off the Cambrian Golden Shield 108-82 to keep their hopes of a repeat alive. The Bruins were led by a balanced attack that saw five players score in double figures. Cory Cooper scored a team high 24 points for the Bruins, while teammate Tab Donaldson chipped in 21.  Algonquin will be looking for solid leadership on the floor and scoring from Charly Spurr who leads Thunder in scoring with 21.75 PPG and Anthony Hinds with a 17.05 PPG.

Algonquin College set Host OCAA Women’s and Men’s Volleyball Quarter-Finals


Wednesday February 18, 2009. The Algonquin College Students’ Association is proud to host two OCAA Quarter-Final Volleyball games on Saturday February 21, 2009.

The first match of the day will have the Algonquin Thunder Women’s team (18-2, first place in the East) play host to the St. Clair Saints (15-5, forth place in the West) at 3:00 pm. The Men’s match will follow as the Thunder (17-1, first place in the East) will host to the Humber Hawks (11-5, forth place in the West) at 5:00 pm. Both games will be played at the Ron Port Athletic Facility, 1385 Woodroffe Ave., Building A121.

Winner advances to the OCAA Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Championships hosted by Durham College in Oshawa.

Algonquin College Thunder Men’s Basketball in action this weekend

Thursday January 22, 2008. – The Algonquin College Men’s Basketball team will be in action Saturday night (January 24) as the Cambrian College Golden Shield travel to Ottawa.

The Thunder Men’s Basketball (11-2-0) team will host the Cambrian Golden Shield (7-6-0) at the Ron Port Facility (Building A121) at 7:00pm.  Algonquin will be led on the court by 5’11” guard Charly Spurr.  Charly in 13 regular season games for the Thunder is averaging 24 points and 3 rebounds per game and is third in OCAA scoring.  Another player to watch on the court for Algonquin is Anthony Hinds (16 PPG). 

Algonquin will be looking to break the three way tie for first place in the East Region with Durham and St. Lawrence Colleges.

Algonquin Thunder Women's Volleyball - OCAA Women’s Team of the Week

 

WomenMove over Algonquin Men, the Women are coming through.  The lady Thunder had a very successful weekend with wins over Durham College (3-1) who were ranked fifth in the province and Loyalist ranked fourth (3-0) in convincing fashion.  The wins help catapult the Thunder in the provincial rankings to fourth from seventh and find themselves alone on top of the OCAA East Region.

Men’s Athlete of the Week – Ryan Debruyn, Algonquin Volleyball

RyanD The Thunder have added more fire power to their already impressive arsenal, adding fourth year veteran, Ryan Debruyn, to the roster. The 6’6 left side hitter has already wreaked havoc on the competition posting a 15 and an 11 point outing versus Cambrian and Boreal respectively. In his first appearance in the blue and white, Debruyn led a balanced force that upended UBC-Okanagon after being down two sets to none. The Ottawa native was named a member of the All-Tournament team after dropping a five set thriller to the Manitoba Bisons to finish fourth at the Florida tournament.
