Athlete of the Week

CharlyAlgonquin College, Tuesday December 9, 2008. – The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) released their weekly awards and Algonquin Thunder Charly Spurr was named the OCAA Basketball Male Athlete of the Week.

 

Algonquin’s Charly Spurr scored 40 points in the Thunder’s 90-54 win over the Seneca Sting.  Spurr’s 40 point outburst is the highest total scored in the OCAA so far this season.  The guard from Lambrick Park currently sits third in OCAA scoring with an average of 26 points per game average helping the Thunder to an 8-1 regular season record tied for first place in the East Region and overall best record in the OCAA.

Algonquin Thunder Sports Wrap-up

 

Tuesday November 25, 2008. – It was a very busy weekend for Thunder Varsity Athletics as the basketball teams hosted four games and volleyball teams were on the road for four games also.

 

THUNDER BASKETBALL

Friday night Basketball was the sport of choice at the Ron Port Facility as our teams hosted the S.S. Fleming Knights.  It was the first win of the season for the Algonquin Women’s Basketball team as they defeat the Knights 58-24.  Ali Calihoo and Lina Aywas led the Algonquin attack with 14 points each followed by Ilhan Hassan with 12 points and 4 rebounds.  Later in the evening spectators were treated to a high-octane game in Man’s action.  Sparked by a 33 point performance by Neil O’Sullivan, the Knights were able to defeat the Thunder 116-108.  Charly Spurr had a game high 38 points for the Thunder which included 6 three-pointers while Anthony Hinds netted 21 points in the loss.

 

On Saturday night the Durham Lords visited Algonquin for an afternoon of basketball action.  In the women’s game Algonquin received a spirited 27 point, 12 rebound performance from Captain Kristen Hibbert in a 62-55 win over the Lords.  With the two wins Algonquin improves to a record of  2-3-0 in the East Region.  On the Men’s side Algonquin was able to rebound after Friday’s loss to defeat Durham 69-64 in a more defensive minded game.  Anthony Hinds was the leader on the floor for Algonquin with a game high 19 points followed by Luc Minani with 12.  After the weekend Algonquin find themselves tied with the Fleming Knights for first place in the East Region with a game in hand.

 

THUNDER VOLLEYBALL

Algonquin Volleyball was on the road this past weekend with stop at Trent University and S.S. Fleming College.  On Friday night it was Trent University.  The women’s match was a 5 set thriller as Algonquin prevailed 3-2.  Melissa Groniger led the Thunder attack with 10 kills, 1 serve ace and 5 stuff blocks.  In Men’s action Algonquin defeated Trent in four sets 3-1.  Adam Gane had a 13 point performance in the victory with 6 kills, 2 serve aces and 5 stuff blocks.

 

On Saturday afternoon Algonquin Volleyball invaded Fleming College.  In Women’s action the Thunder defeated the Knights 3-1.  Statistics have yet to be made available.  Algonquin improves to a record of 9-1, first place in the East Region.  It was all Algonquin in the Men’s match as the Knights were defeated in straight sets 3-0 by Algonquin. Statistics have yet to be made available.  Algonquin improves to a record of 8-1, first place in the East Region 4 points ahead of Trent University.

Algonquin College Thunder Men’s and Women’s Basketball

 

Thursday November 13, 2008. – The Algonquin College Thunder Women’s and Men’s Basketball teams will be in action this weekend (November 14-15) as Centennial and Georgian Colleges will travel to Ottawa.

 

On Friday night the Thunder Men’s Basketball (4-0-0) team will host the Centennial Colts (0-2-0) at the Ron Port Facility (Building A121) at 7:00pm.  Algonquin will be led on the court by 5’11” guard Charly Spurr.  Charly in 4 regular season games for the Thunder is averaging 25 points and 4 rebounds per game and is fifth in OCAA scoring.  Other players to watch on the court for Algonquin are Anthony Hinds (16 PPG) and Davidson Sanelus (14.5 PPG). Then on Saturday Algonquin will host the Georgian Grizzlies (0-3-0) at 8:00pm and look to extend its unbeaten record.

 

In Women’s Basketball action Algonquin will also host the Georgian Grizzlies (2-1-0) on Saturday night at 6:00pm.  Algonquin with a league record of 0-2-0 will be hungry for their first win of the season.  Algonquin will be looking for strong performances from Sam Wood (12.5 PPG) and Dalya Aywas (11 PPG) in order to be successful.

Algonquin Thunder Striker Will Beauge CCAA National Player of the Year

WillBWednesday November 5, 2008.  – Algonquin Thunder striker Will Beauge was named the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) National Player of the Year Tuesday night.

Beauge, a third year striker from Algonquin College, has been at the top of his game this season leading the Thunder with 13 goals in 11 games, including playoffs. His exceptional play helped his team finish the season with a 11-0-1 record, securing his team a first place finish in the OCAA East Region and ranking his Thunder team second overall in the country.

Will’s leadership and competitive drive are an inspiration to the Thunder program and his extensive playing experience solidifies Algonquin’s offensive attack. His knowledge of the game and understanding of his role within the team has also enhanced the Thunder’s overall confidence and trust on the pitch.

Outside of Algonquin College, Will continuously demonstrates a strong work ethic and passion for the game. He is currently a member of the Ottawa Fury Professional Development League Team where this season he was selected as his team’s Most Valuable Player. He has also accepted an open invitation to the Major League Soccer (MLS) combine camp in North Caroline in December. Not only does Will dedicate his time to his team, but he also spends time coaching kids in the Ottawa area. His dedication and leadership skills prove to be second to none.

Will’s outstanding play has earned him various awards and acclamations, including recognition as a two time CCAA Championship Tournament All-Star, the 2007 OCAA Championship MVP, 2007–08 OCAA League All-Star, 2006 CCAA National Champion, 2006, 07 & 08 OCAA Champion.

2008 OCAA Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships – Women’s Gold Medal Game Algonquin Settles for Silver

Thursday October 30, 2008. The Algonquin Thunder Women's Soccer program suffered its first loss of the season in the OCAA Championship Gold medal game 2-0 to the Humber College Hawks.  The loss marks the second year in a row that Algonquin has had to settle for the silver medal and do not qualify for the National Championship.

Monday October 27, 2008. The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championship Gold Medal Games have been reschedule. The Men’s Gold Medal game has been scheduled for Tuesday, October 28 at 4:00pm. The match will be played at Trent University in Peterborough. The Women’s Gold Medal game will be played on Wednesday, October 29 at 4:00pm. This game will also be played at Trent University in Peterborough.

Saturday October 25, 2008.  Day two of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships has been marred by bad weather as only two of four games scheduled were completed.  The women’s and men’s Bronze Medal games were completed but the two Gold Medal games are being postponed with a date and time to be announced.

Algonquin College to Host the OCAA Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships

Wednesday October 22, 2008.  The Algonquin College Students’ Association is the proud host of the 2008 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships. This Championship will showcase the elite four teams from both men’s and women’s collegiate soccer programs in the province, as they compete in a two day tournament commencing Friday, October 24th and concluding on Saturday, October 25th.

Friday, October 24th is the first day of competition with the opening game of the championships starting at 10:00 am.  The Algonquin Thunder Women’s squad (11-0-1) will hit the pitch at 12:30 pm vs. Seneca College (9-1-1) and look to improve on their bronze medal from last year.  The Thunder Men (11-0-1) will play in the primetime match-up as they host the St. Clair Saints (6-4-1) at 5:30 pm.  Algonquin is looking for an unprecedented fifth straight OCAA Gold Medal.

Algonquin Thunder Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams Advance to OCAA Semi-Finals

 

Monday October 20, 2008. – It was another very successful weekend for the Algonquin Thunder Men’s and Women’s soccer teams as they both qualified for the 2008 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships hosted by Algonquin College October 24-25, 2008.

 

The Algonquin College Men’s soccer team are looking to win their fifth straight provincial championship and took one step closer on Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Humber Hawks 3-0 at the Algonquin Soccer Facility.  Humber had no answer for Thunder striker Will Beague who netted all 3 goals for Algonquin and lifted his team into the OCAA Semi-Finals next weekend.

 

On the women’s side Algonquin also advance to the OCAA Semi-Finals next weekend with a 5-0 victory over the Redeemer Royals.  Ally Pross led the attack for Algonquin with 2 goals while Jennifer Groleau, Tamara den Hartigh and Heather Hamel all chipped in 1.   The Thunder are looking to improve on their bronze medal result from last year.

OCAA Soccer Quarter-Final Match Ups Are Set

 

Thursday October 16, 2008. – The Algonquin Men’s and Women’s Soccer teams finished their regular season schedule last night with two wins and are now set to play OCAA Quarter-Final matches.  The Men defeated La Cité Collégiale 3-0 to finish the season with a record of 11-0-1 good for a league high 34 points.  Semir Hadziresic had 2 goals and Stephane Lemay had the other for Algonquin.   On the Women’s side, Algonquin had little problem with La Cité Collégiale winning the match 6-0.  Ally Pross netted 3 goals on the night with Stephanie Young, Nicole DeMonte, and Heather Hamel all adding 1.  The women also finish with a league best record of 11-0-1 good for 34 points overall.

 

With the end of the regular season now starts the playoff schedule with the OCAA Quarter-Finals this Saturday October 18.  Algonquin will host two Quarter-Final games on Saturday.  At 1:00 pm the Algonquin Women’s team will host the Redeemer University College Royals (5-3-2) who placed second in the Central West Region.  At 3:45 pm the Men will host the Humber College Hawks (9-3-0), second from the Central West Region.  The winner of both games will advance to the OCAA Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships hosted by Algonquin College, October 24-25.

Algonquin Thunder Sports Weekend Wrap-up

 

Wednesday October 15, 2008. – As most people enjoyed the Thanksgiving long weekend, all six Algonquin Thunder Varsity teams were in OCAA action.  Basketball, volleyball, and soccer were all being served on the weekend.

Friday night Basketball was the sport of choice at the Ron Port Facility as our teams hosted the George Brown Huskies.  Algonquin’s women’s team were defeated by the Huskies 57-49, Samantha Wood was the leading scorer for the Thunder with 17 points and 6 rebounds.  The Men’s team were on the winning side of things defeating George Brown 106-62.   Charly Spurr had a game high of 34 points for Algonquin.  Also on Friday both soccer teams were on the road.  The women defeated Loyalist College 6-0.  Nicole DeMonte netted 2 goals for the Thunder while Ally Pross, Allie Brown, Jennifer Groleau, and Heather Hamel all scored 1.  On the men’s side of things, Algonquin traveled to George Brown College and played to a 1-1 draw.  Tyller Farrell-Rose had the lone goal for Algonquin. 

On Saturday night the Ron Port Facility was host to OCAA volleyball action.  The Algonquin Women’s Volleyball team hosted the George Brown Huskies and defeated them in 3 straight sets (25-20, 25-18, 25-17).  Ashlie Cormack had 10 kills and 4 serve aces while Kelsey Burton had 12 digs for the Thunder.  The men hosted the University of Toronto Blues and were defeated 3-2 over a 5 set match.  Charlie Hamilton led Algonquin with 18 kills, 1 serve ace, and 4 stuff blocks.  Again on Saturday both soccer teams continued their road trip as they traveled to Centennial College.  The women continued their undefeated season with a 5-1 victory over the Colts.  Nicole DeMonte again was the leader for Algonquin with 2 goals while Ally Pross, Samantha Wright and Heather Hamel all chipped in 1.  The men have also continued their undefeated season with a 2-0 win over the Colts.  Tyller Farrell-Rose and Orhan Akkaya had the goals for Algonquin.

Algonquin Thunder Sink the Vikings

 

Thursday October 9, 2008. – The Algonquin Women’s and Men’s Soccer teams added another win Wednesday night at the Algonquin Soccer Facility as they hosted St. Lawrence College.

 

The Algonquin Women’s team posted a 3-0 victory over the Vikings.  Ally Pross was the smoking gun for Algonquin with a 2 goal performance while Jennifer Groleau added the third goal.  Algonquin now boost a record of 8-0-1, first place in the East Region standings.

 

The Algonquin Men’s team also marked a win posting a 5-0 victory over the Vikings.  Will Beague once again was the top Algonquin threat with 2 goals.  Tyller Farrell-Rose, Edwin Moran and Edgar Soglo all added singles for the Thunder.  The men remain in first place in the East Region with a perfect record of 9-0-0.

 

Algonquin has a busy weekend ahead on the road.  Friday the Algonquin Men’s team will travel to George Brown College for a rematch of last years OCAA final while the Women travel to Loyalist College.  Saturday will see both teams heading to Centennial College.

Algonquin Soccer Remains Undefeated

Monday October 6, 2008. The Algonquin Women’s and Men’s soccer teams both collected two wins over the weekend and remain undefeated in OCAA regular season play. Friday night Algonquin hosted Sir Sanford Fleming College Knights followed by the Cambrian Golden Shield on Saturday.

On Friday night the Thunder Women’s soccer team defeated the Knights 5-1. Ally Pross inspired Algonquin with a 2-goal performance. Other goal scorers for Algonquin were Stephanie Young, Nicole DelMonte, and Christina Cain. Saturday Algonquin defeated Cambrian College 2-0. Christina Cain again scored for Algonquin with Sarah MacDonald added the other. Algonquin now holds a record of 7-0-1 and remain in first place in the East Region.

The Algonquin Men’s soccer team also defeated the Knights on Friday night by a score of 3-1. Edgar Soglo, Tyller Farrell-Rose, and Orhan Akkaya marked the scoreboard for the Thunder. On Saturday Algonquin defeated Cambrian College 5-0. Bruno Mota lead the Thunder attack with 2 goals while Loui Legakis, Perry Legakis, and Edwin Moran all added 1 goal. Algonquin remains the only OCAA Men’s soccer team to remain undefeated with a record of 8-0-0.

Both teams are back in action this week, as Algonquin will host the St. Lawrence College Vikings on Wednesday night at the Algonquin Soccer Facility. The Women will kick-off at 5pm followed by the Men at 7pm.

Algonquin Thunder Soccer Teams Keep on Rolling

 

Monday September 29, 2008. – The Algonquin Women’s and Men’s Soccer teams were both on the road over the weekend in OCAA action.  Saturday they travelled to Sir Sanford Fleming College in Peterborough then made a stop at St. Lawrence College in Kingston.

 

The Algonquin Women’s team posted two wins on the weekend, the first being a 4-2 victory over the Sir Sanford Fleming Knights.  Tamara den Hartigh, Ally Pross, Stephanie Young, and Heather Hamel all scored for the Thunder.  The second victory was a 5-0 defeat of the St. Lawrence College Vikings.  Scoring has yet to be made available.

 

The Algonquin Men’s team also marked two wins this past weekend.  On Saturday Algonquin posted a 2-0 victory over the Sir Sanford Fleming Knights, Semir Hadzirezic handled all the scoring for the Thunder.  On Sunday the St. Lawrence Vikings were no match for the high powered offense of Algonquin in a 6-0 blowout victory for the Thunder.  Scoring has yet to be made available.

 

Algonquin has a busy week ahead on the pitch as the Thunder will host La Cité Collégiale on Wednesday, Sir Sanford Fleming College on Friday, and Cambrian College on Saturday.  Women will kick off at 5pm followed by the Men at 7pm all three evenings at the Algonquin Soccer Facility (Building Z).

Algonquin Women’s Soccer Named OCAA Team of the Week

Wednesday September 24, 2008. – The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) released their weekly awards and the Algonquin Thunder Women’s Soccer Team was named the Women’s Team of the Week.


The Thunder entered the week with the tough task of having to face the two top ranked teams in the province (Durham and Seneca) on back-to-back nights. At the end of the week they had walked away from a hard fought battle against Durham with a tie and exciting 1-0 win over Seneca. Stephanie Young scored the goal against Durham, while Tamara den Hartigh scored against Seneca. Melissa Urguhart was in net for both games.

Algonquin Thunder Soccer Teams Remain Undefeated

Tuesday September 23, 2008. – The Algonquin Women’s and Men’s Soccer teams both picked up some critical points over the weekend in OCAA action.

 

The Algonquin Women’s team posted a win and a draw on the weekend.  Friday night saw the Thunder host Durham College which are ranked as the #3 team in the nation.  After a scoreless first half Stephanie Young opened the scoring for Algonquin early in the second half.  Shortly after, Katie Watts evened the score with her sixth goal of the season for Durham.  Late pressure by the Thunder did not result in a goal and a hard earned draw was the outcome.  On Saturday Algonquin was back on the pitch to host the Seneca Sting.  Tamara den Hartigh was the only goal scorer of the game and lifted the Thunder to their second win of the season, remaining undefeated.  Algonquin is now 2-0-1 and remain in second place in the East Region two points behind Cambrian College with three games in hand.

 

The Algonquin Men’s team marked two wins this past weekend.  Friday night the men also hosted Durham College and walked way with a 2-0 victory over the Lords.  Tyller Farrell-Rose opened the scoring for Algonquin on a penalty kick when a Thunder player was taken down inside the 18-yard box in the first half.  Loui Legakis scored in the second half to seal the victory for Algonquin.  On Saturday it was the Seneca Sting who felt the wrath of the Thunder offense.  Rookie striker Bruno Mota marked the score sheet twice to lead Algonquin to a 3-0 win over the Sting.  Defender Stephane LeMay had the other goal for Algonquin.  The Thunder now sits alone atop the East Region with a record of 3-0-0 one point ahead of Sir Sanford Fleming College.
