Professor – Iain Barrie at 1-613-727-4723 ext. 5560

Iain Barrie was born in Scotland and as a kid, immigrated to Toronto. He grew up listening to some great radio – CHUM, CFRB and big American rock and roll giants out of Chicago, Boston, Albany and New York.

While attending high school just outside Montreal, Iain landed his first radio gig at CKTS in Sherbrooke, Quebec. During university, he was your “Captain” on Flight 1410 at CFMB and then a rock and roll disc jockey at CKGM and CHOM, Montreal’s heritage rocker. He then went to CJAD to do the all-night show that morphed into a reporting job with United Press International.

Helicopter traffic reporting, news, promotion and disc jockeying came next at CKOY (now Oldies 1310) here in Ottawa and then came a stint at CKBY (Y-105) as a country music disc jockey. From here to the CRTC (as a radio spy), the CBC as Chief of Media Relations, the NCC as Director of Corporate Communications.

He combined teaching here at Algonquin College with a News Director’s job at Standard Radio and a programmer’s job with CKBY and CBC’s Satellite service, Galaxie. A love of teaching and sharing about the “business” led to a full time teaching position at the college. He has a Master of Journalism degree and recently authored a chapter in the book Sex, Religion and Media.
