Algonquin College and the NAC - "Hot House Reading Series"
January 5, 2001

On January 8, 2001 - at 8:00 PM - Algonquin College, Media Sector programs will launch an exciting new event in a newly renovated 4th room at the NATIONAL ARTS CENTRE. In collaboration with Algonquin College, the HOT HOUSE READING SERIES will combine the many talents of its writing, acting and television production students. Once a month, 4 new plays, by 4 new writers, will be performed to a live audience at the National Arts Centre.

Debuting on January 8, 2001 are the following plays:

Toasting Derek - Writer: Donna McLaren
Burning toast stokes fires of the past for Roger and Joanna in this black comedy. Whoever thought a toaster could provoke such trouble?

Payment Received - Writer: Nancy Boughner
Three friends find that beneath the surface of an annual get-together lurks guilt, remorse and anger.

The Oboe Solo - Writer: Juli Finlay
A game of Scrabble is the battlefield where Emma and Willow confront fear, honesty and commitment with their future together at stake.

Grass - Writer: Paul Mahar
To mow, or not to mow? A black comedy about the threat of anarchy in suburbia, "Grass" explores freedom, conformity and front lawns.

Algonquin College presents "A Landscape Garden Show"
February 13, 2001

An Opening Gala for the Algonquin College Landscape & Garden Show "Reflections of Spring" will take place on Thursday, February 15th from 6:00 p.m to 9:00 p.m in the Horticulture (M) Building Foyer.

The Show is open until March 30th, 2001 between 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

A Weekend Open House and Plant Sale will take place on March 17th and 18th, from 10:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m.

Algonquin College presents ‘Algonquin Internet Radio’
March 5, 2001

Algonquin College will unveil "leading edge technology" in Radio Broadcasting with the launch of the stand-alone Internet station, Algonquin Internet Radio (AIR).

What: Official launch of Algonquin Internet Radio

IBM Canada Ltd. President/CEO to speak at Algonquin
April 3, 2001

Mr. John Wetmore, President and CEO, IBM Canada Ltd. and Mr. Robert Gillett, President, Algonquin College will address an audience of community leaders at Algonquin College on Monday, April 16th.

Their presentation will highlight the essential components of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which was recently developed by Algonquin College and IBM Canada Ltd. The primary focus of this MOU will be the effective integration of technology into the teaching and learning process at Algonquin College.

Algonquin showcases Animation Program
April 27, 2001

Join the staff and students of the Algonquin College Animation program for the fifth annual Animation Program Open House. Says Paul West, Coordinator, Animation Program, "The Open House event gives the College an opportunity to showcase the superior work of our graduating students." "Portfolios created by the graduating class of the two-year Animation Program will be on display, along with demo reels which will display their animation," adds West.

Algonquin College hosts the Interior Design Graduate Exhibition 2001
May 3, 2001

Who: The award winning Interior Design graduating class of 2001

What: An exhibition and presentation of a portfolio of cumulative work consisting of, the past 3 years of the Interior Design Program. Renderings, Models, Community based projects and drawings.

Where: The Groove, 18 York Street.

When: Monday May 7th from 3:00 p.m until 9:00 p.m.  This event is open to the Design and Architecture Community of Ottawa

Why: This show has grown in scope over the past few years and is sponsored by the Architecture and Design Community in Ottawa. This year we have over 30 sponsors ranging from Interior Design firms to business owners.

This graduating class is very special. The Interior Design Program (coordinator, Dorothy Stern) has just received the coveted F.I.D.E.R (Federation for Interior Design Educational Research) accreditation after 3 long years of dedication by both students and faculty. This year’s class will be the first to graduate with the accreditation.

Advanced Business Interiors hosts the 2nd year Interior Design students of Algonquin College and La Cité Collégiale
May 9, 2001

Who: Advanced Business Interiors, the second year classes of the Interior Design programs from Algonquin College and La Cité collégiale, and various Designers and Architects from the Ottawa- Carleton community.

What: The award and presentation of environmentally conscious design work, in the form of conceptual proposals for the redesign of the new Advanced Business Interiors Showroom. Presented by the 2nd year classes of both Algonquin College and La Cité collégiale.

Where: Advanced Business Interiors, 2160 Thurston Drive. 738-1003

When: Thursday, May 10th from 12:00 p.m to 2:00 p.m.

Why: This was a very special project for both educational institutions and Advanced Business Interiors. It was very exciting to bring the two schools and Industry together in a joint effort of collaboration and teaching. Environmental awareness is an issue of major importance in the design of the built environment.

This project, allowed students access to the "real world" which involves industry being tightly woven into the fabric of the educational process.

On Tuesday, June 5, 2001, 6,000 people will gather at the National Arts Centre to celebrate the 2000/2001 graduates of Algonquin College. This year, Algonquin College will graduate approximately 4,500 students. The President of Algonquin College, Robert Gillett will preside over the presentation of diplomas and certificates.

9:30 a.m. Graduates of the Advanced Technology, Media and Design and Academic Advancement and Languages Schools.

Speaker: Jacquelin Holzman, Member of the Board of Governors

1:30 p.m. Graduates of the Business, Hospitality and Tourism, and Transportation and Building Trades Schools.

Speaker: Russell Mills, Publisher, The Ottawa Citizen

5:30 p.m. Graduates of the Police and Safety Institute and the School of Health and Community Studies

Speaker: Chief Vince Bevan, Ottawa-Carleton Regional Police Service

The ceremonies are being held at the National Arts Centre, Southam Hall, 53 Elgin Street, Ottawa, Ontario.

Exocom sponsors Information Technology Security Award for Algonquin student
June 12, 2001

Who: Communications Security Establishment Deputy Chief Simon Gauthier will present Algonquin College Information Systems Security (ISS) student Brian Caunter with Exocom’s Student Paper Award at the 13th Annual Canadian IT Security Symposium. Brian Caunter’s winning paper and the second-place paper of fellow ISS student Christopher Devine will be on display at the symposium.

What: The Exocom Student Paper Award is open to all full-time Algonquin College ISS students and includes a $500 cash award plus full entrance to the Security Symposium valued at $375.

When: Thursday, June 14, from 12:30 p.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Where: Exhibit Area, Ottawa Congress Centre.

Why: The Exocom Student Paper Award is given to a full time Algonquin ISS student who can translate their education and training into a paper that effectively communicates the benefits of IT security. As a leading IT security company,  Exocom is proud to support local IT security students and is active in the ISS program at Algonquin College. The Canadian IT Security Symposium is a high profile, international event attended by senior representatives from government departments and private sector organizations.

Cave Spring Cellars sponsors Sommelier Award for Algonquin student
June 18, 2001

Who: Cave Spring Cellars representative Andrew Cieszkowski will present Algonquin College Sommelier Program graduate Matthieu Charron with the fourth Cave Spring Cellars Sommelier Award of excellence at the C.A. Paradis Gala Award Dinner. National Capital Sommelier Guild Co-founder J. Phillip Nicholson will also be on hand to give the keynote address.

What: The Cave Spring Cellars Sommelier Award of Excellence is given to the Algonquin College Sommelier Program’s most outstanding student of each graduating class.  The award includes a commemorative plaque, an all-inclusive trip for two to the Niagara wine region, and a V.I.P winery tour.

When: Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at 9:00 p.m.

Where: Restaurant International, Algonquin College’s Woodroffe Campus.

Why: The Sommelier Certificate Program is a two-year program at Algonquin College’s Woodroffe Campus that boasts the region’s only dedicated wine-tasting room, the C.A. Paradis Wine Lab, as well as the region’s only Ministry of Education certification for Sommeliers.

There are over 350 students registered annually in Algonquin College’s Sommelier Certificate Program.  Past graduates have gained positions as sommeliers, restaurateurs, and marketing and sales executives in the food, wine, and beverage industry across Canada and the United States.

Opening day for Mississippi Mills School of the Arts
August 9, 2001

Who:  Algonquin College President Robert Gillett and Mississippi Mills Mayor Ron Pettem will officially open Mississippi Mills School of the Arts, the Ottawa Valley’s first summer school of the arts. Patricia Whitney and other members of the Mississippi Mills School of the Arts Founders Committee will also be on hand to help commemorate the first day of classes.

What:  Beginning August 13, Almonte, located in the town of Mississippi Mills, will be home to local and international artists offering a wide range of creative courses.  The Mississippi Mills School of the Arts runs in two one-week sessions during the month of August, and features instructors with impressive artistic credentials.The courses are geared toward adults of every level of artistic know-how and expertise, and offer a one-of-a-kind learning experience in the historic town of Almonte.

When:  Monday, August 13, at 8:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m.Almonte and District High School, 129 Martin Street North, Almonte, Ontario.

Why:  The school is a result of a partnership between the Mississippi Mills School of the Arts Founders Committee and Algonquin College’s New Media Department, and hopes to attract adults from Ottawa and the Valley region who want to explore and develop their creative talents.

Photoshop for the Artist - Instructor: Sculptor Dale Dunning - Art on the computer using the Adobe Software Program.

Drawing - This course has two instructors – Reva Dolgoy will teach still life and perspective in the mornings and Sue Adams will be instructing life drawing in the afternoons.

Introduction to Glass Bead Making - Instructor: Amy Johnson - Students learn the ancient art of glass bead making using the flame-working technique.

Hand Knitting with Fur - Instructor: Paula Lishman- See Beautiful garments created from natural beaver fur, dyed in fabulous colours.

Life Writing and Memoir - Instructor: Patricia Whitney

Photography and the Art of Selling - Instructor: Val Wilkinson from Valan Photo – Stock Photo Agency.

Clay Relief Sculpture – Instructor: Sculptor Richard Gill

Painting the Landscape – Instructor: Artist Rob Hinchley

A Passion for Papermaking – Instructor: Britt Quinlan – Students will learn how to make beautiful hand-made paper.

WHO: Some of the exciting demonstrations and presentations taking place at tomorrow-night’s Algonquin College winter information evening include:

-Prepare for the $1 Trillion baby boomer inheritance transfer by attending the Certified Financial Planner Program info session. Learn to defend yourself and others against the tax man for the biggest transfer of wealth in history.

-The Police and Public Safety Institute will feature defensive tactics and personal security demonstrations.

-Information Security Systems will be focusing on computer self-defense with a focus on office information security.

-Advanced Technology will feature the Photonics Program and the new Northland eLearning Certificate Program. On display will be a detailed model of the nearly completed Advanced Technology Centre. Also featured will be Algonquin’s online certificate delivery system.

-The Mississippi Mills School of the Arts will unveil its brand-new Creative Arts Certificate Program.
