Algonquin College After Dark

Algonquin College is launching an exciting new look and feel for its upcoming information evening for people interested in winter semester continuing education courses. Called “Algonquin College After Dark,” this one-stop-shopping event will give prospective students an opportunity to meet with faculty and academic advisors, tour college facilities, see dozens of program demonstrations including live musical performances, cooking demos, fitness testing techniques and more. On-site registration is also available for all courses.

Horticulture Show

Algonquin College extends an invitation to the Ottawa area media to use the college's horticulture display area over the Christmas season for broadcast events such live morning or noon hour shows. The college's horticulture students have created Las Flores de Nochebuena, a seasonal floral display with a South American twist. Las Flores de Nochebuena , which translates Flowers of the Holy Night, is the original name for the poinsettia, a plant native to Mexico and South America.

Algonquin College Fall Convocation

More than 300 graduates will be attending Algonquin College’s Fall Convocation to be held at the National Arts Centre on Monday, October 27, 2003. Sherry Thurig, President of the Algonquin College Alumni Association, will present the Alumni-of-the-Year Award to Stuntman Stu of 106.9 The Bear’s Breakfast Show, a graduate of the 1997 class of the Radio Broadcasting program.

Algonquin College Hosts Gala Awards Night

More than 400 guests will be attending the Fifth Annual Awards Gala to be held Saturday, October 25, honouring over 70 Algonquin College students. Senior executives from local businesses such as the Ottawa Police Service, Randall’s Paints, Telesat Canada and the Ottawa Restaurant Association will present the donor-based awards and recognize these award-winning students.

The forum will be moderated by Russell Mills, Algonquin College’s Dean of the School of Media and Design, and will feature opening and closing remarks from all candidates as well as a student panel and question period.

Algonquin College and OCRI host Research Day

Algonquin College’s Office of Applied Research, in conjunction with the Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation (OCRI), is hosting its inaugural Research Day. The College’s ongoing applied research activities in the School of Advanced Technology, the School of Media and Design and the School of Health and Community Studies will be featured through presentations and demonstrations. Tours will be given of Algonquin’s Hapto-Visual Research Centre, High-Definition Cinema Lab and Tele-Health Research Clinic, as well as the College's three photonics labs, animation and TV production studios and the manufacturing and robotics lab.

Algonquin College hosts finals of first-annual high school Computer Programming Olympics

Algonquin College’s Computer Studies department is hosting the finals of its first-annual High School Computer Programming Olympics. This is a computer programming contest open to all Ottawa-area high school students. Students have been given two weeks to create a computer game based on a problem posted on Algonquin College’s School of Advanced Technology Web site, www.algonquincollege.com/atec. Teams have now been chosen to participate in a single-day final-round contest on Saturday, May 24, where each team must enhance their original game to meet new requirements. Among the prizes to be won are trophies, computer equipment and scholarships for the winning participants.

Algonquin College students host High Tech Fashion Show

Algonquin College’s School of Media and Design is presenting a fashion design show entitled High Tech Fashion. This show will feature clothing from ten students of Algonquin’s Fashion Design certificate program. Faculty from the Fashion Design program will also present collections of their own designs, and include locally and nationally-known designers such as Elizabeth Blythe Lilley of Blythe Occasions evening and bridal wear, Tonia Weber of Airline club wear, and Kerry Roney of Kerry Roney Exclusive evening, bridal & career wear.

Algonquin College will co-host the Canadian Association of Police Educators (CAPE) Conference 2003 with the Ottawa Police Service and the Canadian Police College. This is an annual event that brings police officers and educators together from across Canada to share the issues facing police educators through four days of workshops, speeches and discussions. This year’s conference theme is "Learning From Experience", and begins Monday, May 12, with opening remarks from Algonquin College’s President Robert Gillett, Ottawa Police Service Chief Vince Bevan, Canadian Police College Acting Director Russ Grabb and CAPE President Les Chipperfield. |

Algonquin College and University College of the Cariboo strike articulation agreement for adventure programs [January 10, 2003]
Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley has entered into an articulation agreement with University College of the Cariboo in Kamloops, British Columbia that will permit graduates of Algonquin’s Outdoor Adventure and Adventure Naturalist programs to gain advance standing in UCC’s 4-year Bachelor of Tourism Management degree.
