Lieutenant Governor in Ottawa to Present Award to Algonquin College President

Ontario’s Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable James K. Bartleman, will be in Ottawa on Monday, November 29 to present the 2004 Lieutenant Governor’s Medal of Distinction in Public Administration to Robert Gillett, the President of Algonquin College. The Medal, presented jointly by the Lieutenant Governor and the Hamilton, National Capital and Toronto Regional Groups of the Institute of Public Administration, recognizes leadership, innovation, creativity, accomplishments and dedication to the profession of public administration and to the community.

Algonquin College Opens First-of-a-kind Health Science Simulation Lab
[Nov. 19, 2004]
Representatives from all levels of government will be present Friday, Nov. 19 when Algonquin College opens a new, first-of-a-kind simulation lab that will dramatically alter nursing training in Canada. Unique in the way in which technology is integrated into the learning landscape, the lab address issues such as the increasing need for clinical training spaces and enhanced training opportunities for internationally educated nurses and multi-disciplinary teams.

Algonquin College helps high school students answer age old question at College Week events During College Week, thousands of students will have an opportunity to learn about today’s career opportunities when Algonquin College holds first-ever Career Expos at five Ottawa high schools. The Expos will feature interactive displays from Algonquin programs, and College staff and students will be on hand to share information and answer questions. Each host high school is inviting five other schools in their area to attend their event. |
Algonquin’s Close Shave with the United Way

Algonquin College is a whisker away from its $90,000 United Way campaign target. On Wednesday, students, faculty, staff and alumni – young, old, male and female – will be pulling out their hair in efforts to reach the goal. Donors have pledged more than $10,000 to see College legends shave their heads. Highlights include a $3,000 bounty on the locks of Algonquin’s Director of Human Resources, Luc Presseau. The sum will be matched by the law firm Emond Harnden. And a 20-year-old mustache is slated for annihilation.

Hollywood Comes to Algonquin College

Ottawa native Kevin Martel, a digital animation artist now working for Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), will be sharing his insights into how to succeed in Hollywood with students in the Algonquin College animation programs. During his career with ILM, the famed George Lucas special effects firm, Mr. Martel has worked on a number of major feature films including the Star Wars series and the Mummy. |

Algonquin College Convocations

Of the 4,147 students graduating from the Woodroffe Campus of Algonquin College this spring, nearly 2,000 will attend convocation ceremonies at the Corel Centre on Thursday, June 10, and Friday, June 11. For the first time, Algonquin Convocations will be held at the Corel Centre. The venue was chosen in order to accommodate increasing numbers of graduates and guests wishing to attend the ceremonies. Algonquin College President Robert Gillett will preside over the presentation of diplomas and certificates at four separate ceremonies.

Algonquin College Hosts Second AnnualSAT Programming Olympics for High School Students

The Algonquin College School of Advanced Technology will host its second annual SAT Programming Olympics for teams of high school students from the Ottawa Valley region who will vie to see who can design the best Lord of the Rings battlefield simulator. Selected through a preliminary competition earlier in May, finalists will face new challenges to expand the capabilities of their game code at the day-long event. |

Established in the fall of 2003, the Club provides an opportunity for Algonquin College Business Marketing students to learn from and network with the local marketing industry. It has also facilitated a number of short- term paid marketing assignments for students with local businesses. |
Elijah Harper to Address Algonquin College Police Foundations Students

Elijah Harper, Cree leader, former Manitoba MPP and MP will speak to Police Foundations students studying Issues in Diversity/First Nations at Algonquin College. Mr. Harper became known publicly as a representative of Canada’s Native people when he firmly, yet calmly, declared his stand against the Meech Lake Accord. Since that time, he has become a leading figure addressing the plight of Native people across Canada, working for equal justice and better lives.

Algonquin College Students and SAW Gallery Co-host Silent Auction for Shepherds of Good Hope

Students in Algonquin College’s Museum Studies program have joined forces with the SAW Gallery to host a Silent Art Auction to raise money for the Shepherds of Good Hope. Local area artists, including Brad Snow, Juan Carlos Noria and Alison Smith-Welsh, who have donated works will attend the auction. DJ Rise Ashen will provide entertainment.

Ottawa New Car Dealers Association Establishes Don Mann Bursary at Algonquin College

The Ottawa New Car Dealers Association will present a cheque for $40,000 to the Algonquin College Foundation to establish a bursary in the name of the late Don Mann, a much respected car dealer and former executive director of the Association. The presentation will be made to Algonquin College President Robert Gillett and Algonquin College Foundation Chair Barbara Farber at the Congress Centre.

Algonquin College Hosts CIPS ‘Women in Technology’Event for High School Students

On March 4, the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS) will hold a career awareness event for 99 Ottawa area high school girls at Algonquin College. The goal is to raise awareness among young women about careers in technology, specifically Space, Forensic Science, IP Law, and Air Traffic Control, through a fun-filled day of hands-on learning and inspiring guest speakers. The major sponsors are Avanade, B2T Resources Inc., and IBM.
