Building a School Dormitory

July 15th – July 19th – See the Calendar for the complete schedule

Algonquin College and Canadian Adventure Productions (CAP) are continuing the SWBP Expedition Africa (2006) in Tanzania as a way of extending Algonquin College’s commitment to the communities of Northern Tanzania to improve the local children’s lives through education. Algonquin College provided student raised fundraising dollars to kickoff the new initiative to build a girl’s dormitory at Awet Secondary School in the village of Kimbia Ya Simba (Camp of Lions Village), Mbulu Mbulu division, Karatu district, Arusha region.

Climbers, students, faculty and the local community raised the dollars and met the required target of $50,000 in order to build the Awet dormitory.

This building project comes under the umbrella of Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR) who will administer the project from their office in Karatu.

Did you know?

Awet Secondary School is a very popular school because of its dedicated teachers and high test scores (first in the district). It has 649 students - 373 of which are young women - and there is only room in the girls' dormitory for 120 girls.

The dormitories for female students are important to their education. Students must leave home for secondary school in order to prevent their studying time from being eroded by household tasks such as childcare, cooking and collecting water/firewood. If young women stay in town rather than in dormitories, they are also at risk of harassment.
