Profile - Sue-Ellen Johnston

Why are you climbing Kilimanjaro?

  • Ben Webster came to Ashbury College looking for people for his 3 year project to Kilimanjaro. My husband had talked to someone who had done a Kilimanjaro climb about 3 years ago which sparked Peter’s interest to add this to his “bucket list” or “things to do before I die” list. Hence as soon as we went to Ben’s talk I knew we would be going.
  • I wanted to see a different part of the world.
  • I wanted myself & daughter to see a 3rd world country (how good we have it here in Canada)
  • I was more interested in the giving back part of the climb (AWET build) and the climb just happened to be part of it.

What are your personal goals related to the climb?

  • To go as far as I can go.
  • Overcome barriers (physical & mental)

What’s the funniest/strangest thing that’s ever happened to you?

My Husbands' proposal.  We were in the back woods of New Brunswick and Peter rode down the dirt road on the back of a horse (Ben) in a suit of armour, Johnston shield and lance.  Now he requested that the trumpet not be blown as he had just been thrown off the horse at the top of the road before joining me at the bottom of the road.  Too bad I wasn’t there to see that one!

Tell us about an accomplishment that you’re proud of.

  • Children and their accomplishments
  • Training for this climb (hiking up to 13kms in one day, walking, trainer twice a week, chiropractic, physiotherapy, osteopathy & massage)
  • Naval Reserves for 3 years
