Profile - Sylvie Veillette

As a mature student, in my fourth and last semester of the Algonquin College Registered Practical Nursing program, I am honored to have the opportunity to experience this great adventure. My contribution to this project will be to help build a girl’s dormitory at the Awet Secondary School, to foster communication, and to provide health teaching to the people of the Karatu village.

After working for over 25 years as an assistant and executive assistant in the administration field, for the federal government, crown corporations, private industries, and the Canadian Armed Forces, I have acquired many personal and work related skills that will come into play for this project. During my 15-year stay in Vancouver, BC, I have volunteered at providing administrative support to the Salvation Army Palliative Care, the Rosewood Manor BBQ Extravaganza, the Red River Flood in Manitoba and the United Way.

As I am making a career change from the administrative to the practical nursing field, this experience is solidifying my desire to help people. It is providing me the opportunity to educate myself about the economy, the politics, the environment, and the culture that influence the health issues of developing countries such as Tanzania.

My personal objective from this expedition is to take and make opportunities to educate my peers, my family, and others about my experience and knowledge acquired in Karatu, Tanzania.
