2003 event details: Retirees' Chapter Spring Social 2003

by Jean Painter

A bright blue sky, the scent of a spring garden, strawberry shortcake, a great group of friends and two sharing horticulture professors all added up to a very pleasant and fun spring gathering on May 23 for the Algonquin Retirees' Chapter of the Alumni. Over 70 people came to Woodroffe for a tour of the Horticulture facility and grounds with Brian Henderson and a session with Phil Tuba on designing gardens for small spaces. The two shared their extensive knowledge and willingly answered a myriad of questions.

Dawn Dube, Director of Public Relations, was MC for the afternoon and gave very warm greetings to the Retirees. She thanked the group for their generous contributions to Centre 454, a day drop in centre for homeless, street and needy people. Rebecca Volk, Professor in the Police Foundations Program has been active for many years at the Centre and we were pleased to support her efforts. The hat was also passed for the Plant Some Roots entry-level scholarships and bursaries. It is the intention of the Retirees' Chapter to support a charitable cause at each of their gatherings. The Executive would be more than pleased to hear if any retirees are involved with groups or causes that we could support in the future.

Greetings to the group were brought by President Bob Gillett on behalf of the College and from Sherry Thurig, President of the Alumni Association. Sherry presented Gladys McRae with the Alumni Volunteer of the Year award for her leadership and continued support in the development of the Retirees' Chapter. Congratulations Gladys!

A handout was made available from Connie Powers in Human Resources of some current useful information.

The Executive would like suggestions for future activities and also want your e-mail address and telephone number. If you do not have an e-mail address the Alumni Office will gladly send you hard copies. Contact the Alumni Office at (613) 727-4723 ext. 7113.

Keep in touch and keep active!
