“It gave me an opportunity to finish my high school courses and start a program at college.”

– Melanie, former Achievement Centre student

The Algonquin College Achievement Centre is best described by Manon Seguin, Superintendent Student Success (Ottawa Catholic School Board) as:

“This centre provides an opportunity for those who have left high school to become familiar with the college setting while completing their diploma. The site allows students to participate in the college college’s activities, and to access their services and facilitates. Many students take the opportunity to complete dual credits recognized by both the high school and the college institutions. Yearly, we honour over 50 high school graduates who, for the most part, pursue college or university education.”

Students who may be behind in credit accumulation, are at risk of leaving high school before obtaining an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, and demonstrate the ability to be self-motivated, self-directed and self-disciplined, can be recommended for the program by their home schools. To be eligible, students must demonstrate completion of the mandatory 40 hours of community service and successful completion of the Literacy test or course.

Achievement Centre graduates are contributing to our society in some exciting ways: a practice nurse working at the Royal Ottawa Hospital; a graduate student from the University of Ottawa who is now enrolled in PR and has an internship in New York City; and a graduate from Trent University in environmental science who has recently received a grant to study in Mexico!
