A.C.E. (Advanced Conveyance Examination)

2nd Place Winning Project

Our team (dotMatrix) was tasked to work with the Canadian Border Services Agency to develop and design an Android app to aid the workflow of Border Service Officers. Advanced Conveyance Examinations (A.C.E) is a tool for Border Service Officers to view and add methods used to conceal illegal goods within vehicles.

A.C.E. (Advanced Conveyance Examination) group

Automatic Palletizing Station

3rd Place Winning Project

The objective of this project is to create a fully automated palletizing station using the Fanuc robot arm. The station will work with the existing MPS modules in the school. It will take the boxes produced by the system, stack them on a skid, and wrap them in order to be sent out for shipping.

Call for Judges – RE/ACTION Applied Research Showcase August 2019

The Office of Applied Research, Innovation & Entrepreneurship is seeking volunteer judges for the applied research showcase competition on Friday, August 9th, 2019.

Every year, student teams work on applied projects in which they apply knowledge and skills acquired through their field of study. This spring, they will be on display at the applied research showcase: “RE/ACTION” on Friday, August 9th, 2019. Research projects fall into a number of categories:

Science, Engineering, and Construction
Arts, Design, Business, and Management
Information Technologies, Mobile and Web Design

Judges evaluate selected student team’s results, based on novelty/creativity, technical competence, impact, the strength of client-team interactions and communication and presentation skills.

This event provides an excellent opportunity for entrepreneurs and industry leaders to network with Algonquin’s capable and motivated academic community of students and faculty.

Dancing Data Visualization

1st Place Winning Project

A data visualization tool built to create seamless data animations at the click of a button. This tool allows large data sets to showcase relationships that are often lost in multi-dimensional forms. We call these animations ‘Dancing Data’.

Big Data for Small Places

2nd Place Winning Project

BD4SP is a project that’s at its core is to supply small business and small places with the right tools to make better decisions in order to create growth. At the center piece of this project, we focused on Frontenac County, which struggled to make sense of all the information it had to pin point: where they should invest their money? Where are the healthy hamlets? What are the social demographic issues that affect those factors? And many more. This project is meant to give visual representation, make sense of the data that’s being supplied and help Frontenac make more calculated predictions in the its future.

This project’s goal is to create interactive Arduino labs for students in the library and to create an information technician program at Algonquin College. These labs are aimed at early users, with a range from simple labs for children to more interesting labs for others.

Expense Tracking App

SmartMoms is a mobile application for iOS and Android that pairs with Fitbit to track weight gain, calorie intake, quality of sleep, physical activity, and heart rate of expecting mothers. With a main focus on health, it helps women make healthy choices through each stage of their pregnancy.

Immunity Warriors

2nd Place Winning Project

Immunity Warriors is a motion comic book that uses Madefire to transform a traditional comic book into an exciting interactive experience. With an action packed storyline, Immunity Warriors educates children on their immune system, battling viruses, and the importance of vaccinations.

Mobile Innovation Ecosystem Map App

3rd Place Winning Project

A complex large-format map of Canada’s Innovation Ecosystem was reimagined for a smartphone app.Bureaucrats and Trade Commissioners need to tell Canada’s innovation stories in the field, often without a lot of space. The team has taken their user-tested redesign into a coded prototype.

Maclean’s Covers Applied Research Project: Live Line

A team of recent graduates from Algonquin College paired up with Hydro Ottawa this summer to help make a dangerous job a bit safer. Bradley Kasaboski, Derek Boase and Mauricio Ledón spent three months developing a prototype for a training jacket that can teach would-be power-line technicians how to navigate high-voltage wires.

Masterpiece VR

1st Place Winning Project

Masterpiece VR is a Virtual Reality application used to create stunning 3D art, including sculptures,paintings, and even whole scenes. This is all achieved through a combination of PhD level mathematics,cutting-edge technology and professional grade software/UI design.

SmartMoms Canada

2nd Place Winning Project

SmartMoms is a mobile technology-based program designed to help women adhere to the gestational weight gain (GWG) guidelines, improve maternal-fetal health and attenuate the intergenerational cycle of obesity (fewer big babies, less post-partum weight retention and subsequent obesity in mom). The developed system consists of two mobile applications (Android and iOS), a web application and a backend server. Feedback that considers participant’s data gathered from Wi-Fi enabled accessories (FitBit physical activity tracker and an electronic weight scale) and provides personalized recommendations.The SmartMoms intervention also includes regular delivery of health information to women regarding their weekly GWG, physical activity and nutritional goals via the application.
