TSC: Support Before Post-Secondary

Transition Support for Families

The purpose of the Transition Support Centre (TSC) is to facilitate a successful transition to post-secondary education for students with autism. We recognize that planning and preparing for this transition can be a time-consuming, intensive, individualized process that often involves many people. TSC staff aim to support families making this transition through offering a workshop entitled Supporting Transitions to Post-secondary Education.

Support Person/Parent Support

We recognize that parents/support persons have played, and will continue to play, a fundamental role in advocacy for their student as they transition to post-secondary education. As such, we encourage communication between parents/support persons and the TSC in the year leading up to the transition for information about college readiness, documentation requirements, and opportunities for skill-building. We will be communicating directly with our students once they begin their first semester of college.

Students are expected to take responsibility for their post-secondary experience, including meeting with staff, stating their needs, and connecting with other services when necessary. At the TSC, we realize that these activities can be a challenge for students with autism, and are fully prepared to support students as they develop self-advocacy skills. Parents/support persons play an important role by continuing to support students within the family environment. They are welcome to check our website to remain up-to-date concerning the activities and services available through the TSC.

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions page for support persons/parents for more information.
