TSC: Parent and Support Person FAQs

How do I know if my student is eligible for the Transition Support Centre services?

Any student with autism who plans to attend post-secondary studies can access transition workshops offered by the TSC. Students with autism who are attending Algonquin College can access support through the TSC.

How can I help get my student ready for college?

Begin with some initial research. Review the documents provided under our Transition Support for Families section and review the Centre for Accessible Learning website to get a sense of what promotes success for students at the post-secondary level. Assess what will be needed at home to support student success. Identify student strengths and needs. Gather available documentation that provides recommendations for academic accommodations that will be supportive of student success in their studies.

The TSC offers workshops that provide families with information on college readiness, examples of expectations at college, an overview of the many services available for students, and strategies to build on current skills that will be useful in a post-secondary environment. See Transition Support for Families for more information.

What is a Letter of Accommodation (LOA)?

I would like to communicate with my child’s professor. How should I go about doing this?

Generally, we would encourage parents to support their child in communicating effectively directly with their professors. This can include helping them to identify their needs and requests, helping them to compose emails and manage responses, or role-playing phone or in-person conversations. Algonquin College considers students over 16 to be responsible adults, and the College must uphold the privacy of the student. Generally, College representatives will not release information to parents without written authorization.

What services from the Transition Support Centre can I access as a parent?

The TSC staff offer support workshops for families and students with autism who are planning to attend post-secondary education. TSC staff are happy to provide individual consultation or support to parents who are preparing their child for a transition to post-secondary education.
