Course descriptions

Introduction to Project Management

This course provides students with an overview of project management and an introduction to leadership and ethics. Students learn the fundamental principles of project management including project initiating, project planning, creating of the Work Breakdown Structure, estimating effort, budgeting, scheduling using Gantt charts and network diagrams, risk management, controlling resources, quality assurance, and auditing and closing. The techniques are based on a study of the typical project lifecycle.

Project Definition and Planning

This course focuses on project definition and planning, and its relevance through the project lifecycle. The course focus rests on the definition of project scope, creation of work breakdown structures and development of the project network and resource allocations, followed by the development of the project budget. The budget is then used as the basis for project control and performance reporting. Consideration is also given to the need for risk and quality management at the planning stage. Topics include scope definition, duration estimation, critical path method, estimation techniques, techniques to reduce project duration and the use of earned value analysis as a performance reporting and prediction tool.

Project Management and the Human Interface

In addition, to understanding and employing project management tools and techniques, the project manager and project management staff must have the human relations skills necessary to lead a project through initiation, implementation and termination. This course explores various leadership techniques necessary to control the human dynamic within the project lifecycle. Through a series of workshops and exercises, students study the dynamics of politics, team building, leadership and conflict control. Upon completion of this course, students understand the importance of blending sound project management techniques with effective leadership skills.

Project Management Scheduling Software

Project management software greatly increases the ability of the project manager to work more efficiently. The functions of project planning and scheduling, resource allocation and costing, progress monitoring and reporting are explored in detail. The student moves from an introductory to an advanced level of familiarity with the functions of MS Project, a typical project management software tool.

Project Risk Control and Quality Management
The course is based on the processes of the Project Management Institute's (PMI) "A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)", for the management of Risk and Quality in projects. The Risk Management module leads students through an organized approach to risk management, starting with planning for risk management, through the identification and quantification of risks, preparation of risk response strategies, and the monitoring and control of risk factors. The Quality Management module introduces students to the functions of quality planning, quality assurance, quality control and quality improvement in projects. Students also learn about the evolution of quality management and the international system of ISO standards.

Contracting and Procurement in Project Management

Projects are by definition unique endeavors and, as a result, there are normally legal considerations that affect the implementation of a project. This course examines the tendering process, contract management and intellectual property. Students study legal procedures from a theoretical and practical standpoint. Students learn to prepare key documents, such as specifications, bid packages, evaluation documents and contracts. A key aspect to this course is developing an understanding of the procurement and contracting processes to produce contracts, procurement documentation and risk mitigation.

Directed Studies in Project Management

This is the final course taken by the student in the Project Management certificate program. The course is intended to consolidate all previous knowledge gained and to apply this knowledge by completing a single project with all related project documentation. This is a self-study course which is guided by an assigned instructor who monitors the progress of the student.
