Furniture Finishes and Repair

Course: WOO5573

Finishing and restoration of furniture are essential aspects in the creation of beautiful and long-lasting pieces. Using a variety of wood panels, students learn how to prepare surfaces to accept colour and finishes such as stain, fillers, varnishes, oils and glazes. Shading and toning techniques are also covered. Students learn touch- up and repair methodologies in order to identify damage and apply appropriate techniques to restore the structural integrity and finish of the original furniture piece. Students use the panels to practise and apply touch-up techniques for scratches, dents and colour matching. Students also learn methodologies on how to repair broken components, cracks and shrinkage splits. All supplies are included in the course fee. Students are encouraged to bring their projects from Woodworking I and/or Woodworking II for finishing practice.
