IV Insertion with Blood Withdrawal

This hands-on workshop offers RNs and RPNs an opportunity to build upon and update their theoretical knowledge (as previously learned in their nursing program) of IV insertion and blood withdrawal. Content reviewed includes guidelines for vein selection; IV insertion devices; procedure for IV insertion/blood collection; troubleshooting IV start complications and infection control as it relates to skin puncture. Participants are given the opportunity to set up and maintain intravenous therapy and blood withdrawal on blood filled simulated arms. This course is limited to RNs and RPNs who hold a current Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario and who have had the theory of IV initiation within their nursing program. There is no formal testing for this workshop and no formal certificate is awarded upon successful completion. Participants receive a college transcript.
