Networking and Maintaining a Computer System

Course: CST6556

The key to supporting the upkeep of computer systems is to understand the operating systems, applications and hardware/software troubleshooting within the context of the people and organizations using the computers. A practical overview of networking, troubleshooting and maintaining a computer system is provided. Through hands-on exercises, students apply and experience topologies, cabling and wireless technologies, as well as local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), and other network types. Students install and configure network interface cards (NICs), install appropriate protocols and use switches and routers. Students also practise troubleshooting techniques, such as recognizing and recovering from different computer hardware faults and networking problems, scheduling preventive maintenance, and replacing and upgrading components. They also learn how to customize, secure and configure home wireless networks.

Notes

Students are required to have an antistatic wrist strap and a computer repair tool kit.
