Understanding Hospice Palliative Care - A Clinical Perspective
Caregivers are provided opportunities to develop practical knowledge of caring for individuals/families dealing with dying and death. Building on the course, Understanding Palliative Care from Within, as well as clinical experiences, students examine common themes and related issues which prevail throughout various illness trajectories. Management of end of life care, physical and emotional symptoms and total pain are explored. Students learn screening and assessment tools and apply them to case studies and video clips. A discussion forum regarding ethical issues of culture and religion at end of life is hosted with local funeral personal and clergypersons. Student learning is guided by the RNAO Best Practice Guideline: Establishing a Therapeutic Relationship. This learning experience provides a discussion on professional boundaries and practical tips to address these daily issues in clinical practice.
