What to Know About Becoming AC Alumni

With graduation just around the corner, you’re probably just looking forward to finishing exams and assignments up, but another benefit is you become an Algonquin College alumnus/alumna! Student Services spoke with Katie Ciavaglia, Alumni Officer, who gave a rundown of some alumni perks.

1. Discounts

As an AC grad, you’re eligible for a range of benefits and services that you can get when you use your alumni card. This includes:

  • 10% discount at Connections, the Algonquin College bookstore (excludes textbooks and electronics).
  • Discounted rates at the Fitness Zone for 4-month or 12-month passes
  • 10% discount at the Algonquin Print Shop
  • Discounted stay at Residence during the Summer
  • 10% discount at terra20, a hip green living store in Ottawa
  • Discounts on home, auto, travel, health, and dental benefits through partners Johnson and Manulife Financial, as well as a MBNA MasterCard with no annual fee.

    To obtain your alumni card, contact the Alumni and Friends Network office at alumni@algonquincollege.com or stop by Room C212, Monday to Friday from 8am-4pm.

2. Employment Resources

You have access to the Employment Support Centre even after you graduate and embark on your career path. Employment officers can help you:

  • Update your resume and cover letter
  • Succeed in interviews
  • Create an appealing LinkedIn profile or professional portfolio
  • Expand your job search techniques
  • Refine your networking skills
  • Find job postings on MyCareerZone through ACSIS
  • Locate information on Ottawa community resources

Consultations are available by appointment to all alumni. To make an appointment at the Ottawa campus, contact the Welcome Centre at 613-727-4723 ext. 7200. There is also employment support available at the Perth and Pembroke campuses. See the Employment Support Centre website for more info.

3. Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering is a great way to give back to your alma mater, while also enhancing your educational, personal, and professional development. The Algonquin College Alumni and Friends Network are always looking for volunteers to do classroom presentations and support their events – they’d love for you to share your time and talent! Email alumni@algonquincollege.com if you would like to volunteer.

4. Further your Education

Interested in furthering your career or learning something new? You have access to lifelong learning opportunities through Algonquin’s grad certificate programs and the Centre for Continuing and Online Learning. The CCOL has more than 130 programs and 1,000 courses that are offered evenings, weekends, and online to work with your schedule and interests.

5. Events

Throughout the year, the Algonquin College Alumni and Friends Network provides an assortment of networking opportunities with events such as speed networking, Industry Talks, and the Employment Support Centre’s Career Networking Fair. Be sure to update your email address once you graduate to ensure they can let you know about upcoming networking opportunities.
