MENTEE CRITERIA
Mentees must:
- hold provisional immigration status. Ideally they will be in their own country for 6 months to complete the cycle before they come to Canada. This can be flexible if need be. However, the model is based on pre-departure mentoring.
- meet CLB ratings of 7 or higher. Reading, writing and comprehension language levels must be strong in order to a) complete the course and b) work with their mentors in an online setting. Language levels are expected to improve over the mentoring cycle, especially in the use of occupation specific language and workplace vernacular.
- have selected a destination within Canada. This will facilitate the matching with an appropriate mentor and settlement agency contact and allow for location specific networking to take place before they arrive in Canada.
- be willing to take an online course
- have basic computer skills and have access to a computer (either personal or via the E-COA foreign site). Some basic support will be provided in the form of an online tutorial and tutor, but there is minimal emphasis on the training of basic computer skills.
- be willing to spend a minimum of 24 hours over a six month period engaged in the mentor-mentee relationship
The mentor-mentee relationship
The mentor-mentee relationship established through the COME Program is a six month relationship with no obligation to extend it beyond that. The agreed upon time spent on the actual relationship itself is a minimum of 24 hours over that six month period. Any relationship beyond the six month time period is solely up to the individuals involved and is outside the scope of the program.
