The Dementia Studies Certificate program is designed to build skills to increase competency in caring for those with dementia.  It will be of particular interest to those at a post-certificate level already working in the health or social science field.

Participants learn how to:

  • Provide care that recognizes the uniqueness of each individual and the importance of preserving the personhood of the individual with dementia;

  • Utilize care-giving strategies that promote the strengths and abilities of the individual and promote positive outcomes for both the individual with dementia and the care provider;

  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to holistically assess the care needs of individuals with dementia as well as family members and significant others;

  • Recognize the ethical and legal implications affecting individuals with dementia and provide an environment that empowers individuals and families as they prepare to make difficult choices;

  • Stimulate positive changes in the workplace environment to meet the changing needs of the individual with dementia;

  • Maintain competency as a care provider by seeking out learning opportunities on an on-going basis;
