Community Health Emergency

Algonquin College maintains a Pandemic Response plan. It is recognized, however, that there may be other localized health emergencies that affect our immediate community.

Algonquin College will take such measures as are necessary and prudent to establish safeguards for staff and students during a community health emergency such as an outbreak of an infectious disease. Further, College measures may be implemented to ensure that College activities do not undermine the response of the municipal and provincial health authorities in such circumstances.

Upon notification that a community health situation exists that may impact upon College operations and that requires specialized precautions or information be developed, applied, monitored, reported or disseminated within the College community, the President may activate this portion of the Emergency Management Plan.

Upon activation, the Chair of the Emergency Management Group (EMG) will call a meeting of the EMG with a specific mandate to:

  • Monitor impact on staff and student attendance in order to set thresholds for the cancellation of College activity where necessary and establish recovery plans for those areas where such a reduction in activity will threaten the academic year
  • Establish appropriate liaison with the Medical Officer of Health to obtain up to date and accurate medical and health related information
  • Work cooperatively with health authorities with respect to contact interviewing, screening, decontamination and quarantine procedures
  • Establish mechanisms for appropriate internal communications
  • Research, develop and implement required policies in consultation with PEC
  • Establish necessary resources for the implementation of specific response plans / policies
  • Provide advice to the President’s Executive Committee (PEC) with respect to return to normal operation plans following appropriate clearances from community health authorities
