AlgonquinCollegeLogo Algonquin College - Expansion Proposal

With the support of both provincial and federal government, Algonquin’s proposed Woodroffe Campus expansion will provide 2,600 of the 3,000 additional student spaces, help manage the pending shortage of construction and health care professionals in Ontario, and meet student demand for growth in other high-skill areas.

To be constructed on land pledged by the City of Ottawa, the new facility will integrate a renewed Baseline transit station into its design. Connected to the main campus via a $5 million pedestrian bridge, the proposal includes $69 million for a Centre for Construction Trades and Building Sciences and $35 million for Health Programs and Strategic Growth.

The proposed Woodroffe campus expansion has two components.

Centre for Construction Trades and Building Sciences

An integrated learning and applied research environment addressing the evolving knowledge and skill demands of the construction industries.

Algonquin’s new Environmental Demonstration Centre for Construction Trades and Building Sciences will be the cornerstone of this vision for success. As the name implies, the state-of-the-art centre will bring together all professional disciplines including architecture, interior design, engineering, building trades, as well as construction industry research, into one creative cluster dedicated to producing project-ready construction industry workers for Ottawa and Eastern Ontario.

Serving as a national centre for the study and research in sustainable construction and building sciences, this state-of-the-art facility will bring together students, Professors, researchers and industry, creating synergies that will produce highly skilled graduates familiar with the team work requirements of today’s modern construction sector.

The 160,000 square foot LEED-Gold certified space will be a showpiece of “green” building practices and curriculum. This living lab will teach students the importance of sustainability, energy efficiency and reducing building impacts on human health and the environment through better building design, construction, maintenance and operation.

When completed, the Centre will add 600 new construction trades spaces and become home to thousands more cross-disciplined students. These future employees and “green” building advocates will be taught from a renewed curriculum which will place increased emphasis collaborative learning, problem solving, learning by doing, and team study.

Today’s construction industry requires an enhanced level of education and training which incorporates the latest research, technology, innovation, environmental knowledge and cost saving strategies offered through a broad menu of delivery modalities. At the request of industry, just-in-time training and re-certification will be offered at the new facility and strong partnerships will be established with other training providers. The Centre will stand as a one-stop-shopping venue for all of the industry’s training needs.

As an integrated learning and applied research environment housed in an innovative, environmentally efficient structure, the Environmental Demonstration Centre for Construction Trades and Building Science will produce workers and citizens dedicated to building a sustainable future.

Health and Strategic Growth

Health care in Canada needs to move from a ‘find it’ and ‘fix it’ approach to ‘prevent it, find it, manage it

 - Health Council of Canada’s Health Outcomes Report, March 2007

The $35 million Health Sciences and Strategic Growth portion of Algonquin’s expansion plans will create 2,000 additional student spaces (1,000 in health and 1,000 in other strategic growth areas across the College) and expand the College’s commitment to health education that focuses on prevention and promotion.

Algonquin’s new health expansion will extend the College’s leadership in health and community studies education, encouraging student success through simulation, innovative programming and applied research.

The new facilities will allow the College to consolidate its existing health laboratories. The facilities plan includes:

  • Five basic care labs
  • One emergency and trauma lab with 2 intensive care bays and two isolation units
  • A seniors apartment prototype
  • A Health Services Wellness Centre incorporating the current health services under one umbrella. This will be a store front clinic and student learning site.
  • Polysomography lab
  • Cardiac Diagnostic Lab with fitness assessment
  • Medical Radiation Therapy Land and Digital Imaging Labs
  • Pharmacy Technician lab and storefront pharmacy

The expansion will permit the College to increase health student spaces by over 950, ensuring an ongoing local supply of Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, Anesthesia Assistants, Social Service Workers, Massage Therapists, Dental Hygienists, Medical Radiation Technologists, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Assistants, Early Childhood Educators, Fitness Instructors, Health Promotion Advocates and Paramedics.
