Keep Calm and Eat Healthy

Visual for healthy eating campaignWhen you’re studying for finals, good nutrition often slides way down on the priority list. It’s easy to get into the habit of drinking more than a few cups of coffee and choosing take-out pizza more often then you should, because you don’t want to waste time on food preparation. But, actually, good nutrition should be part of your study plan because it’s going to help you ace those tests. The better the fuel your brain gets, the better you’ll study.
It’s a, well, no-brainer.

Take a peek at our healthy eating tips below!

Here are some healthy eating tips:

  1. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. We serve fresh crepes, fresh fruit and granola, oatmeal, bacon, eggs and more at our Food Services locations.
  2. Chew your food slowly, savoring every bite. We tend to rush though our meals, forgetting to actually taste the flavors and feel the textures of our food. Reconnect with the joy of eating!
  3. Fill up on colorful fruits and vegetables! Branch out beyond bright and dark green lettuce. Kale, mustard greens and broccoli are just a few of the options. They are all packed with calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, zinc, and vitamins A, C, E, and K!
  4. Healthy carbs (sometimes known as good carbs) include whole grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables. Healthy carbs are digested slowly, helping you feel full longer and keeping blood sugar and insulin levels stable.
  5. Vegetables and fruit are packed with nutrients and fiber, so enjoy a wide variety of them! Try to include at least one dark green and one orange veggie daily.
  6. Spinach- we’ll spare you the Popeye jokes, but spinach has serious health benefits! For one thing, it contains lots of lutein, the sunshine-yellow pigment found in egg yolks, and is also a great source of iron!
  7. Thank you dark chocolate, for making us feels good—not guilty—about dessert! Dark chocolate is filled with flavonoid antioxidants that keep blood platelets from sticking together and may even unclog your arteries.
  8. Bananas are loaded with potassium—a macronutrient that helps control your blood pressure and keeps your nervous system operating at peak efficiency.
  9. Order foods that are lower in calories, fat, sugar, & sodium! For example, choose salad instead of fries as your side. You can also control your portions when you ask for gravy, sauces and salad dressing. Ask for them “on the side,” and use only a small amount.
  10. Include fiber in your diet. Fiber aids digestion and lowers cholesterol — and can help with weight loss. Good fiber sources include oatmeal, beans, whole grain foods, and a variety of fruits and vegetables.
