Alternative Retiree Benefit Plans

Helpful Tips and Contacts

  • Ensure that you select a plan(s) that provides you with the level of coverage you need both now and in the future.
  • Normally Health care is more of a concern to an individual than Dental care. For instance, based on your dental needs, you may elect not to purchase a dental plan at all, and just pay-as-you-go. Consequently, the focus will be more on your Health care plan, both now and in the future.
  • Does your spouse have coverage through his/her employer, if so, take advantage of that plan first.
  • Look for limitations and/or exclusion within each plan and ask detailed questions about the type of coverage you will be receiving.
  • Note that each of these plans will only allow you a certain number of days to apply for coverage without having to provide evidence of insurability. This is particularly important to anyone who currently has a medical condition for which you may be denied coverage or you will have to pay higher premium rates because of the condition.
  • Some plans require that you be enrolled prior to your 65th birthday - make sure that you are able to submit claims from the date of enrolment.
  • Out-of-country coverage (Travel Insurance) - make sure the plan covers your medical needs and that you are familiar with the requirement for ensuring payment of claims, if treatment is required when traveling out of country.

Prescription Drugs for age 65 and over: The Ontario Drug Benefit Plan (ODB) is the first payor for prescription drugs for those aged 65 and over. Should you enroll in an individual health care plan that insurance provider would be the second payor. What this means is much of your prescription drug costs should be submitted to and be reimbursed by ODB (speak to your pharmacist) and the residual balance, in the form of deductibles, dispensing fee caps and other such items can then be claimed under your new individual policy, or if none exists then paid by you.
