Part-Time Academic Classifications

Part-Time, or 'temporary', Academic staff members are divided into three classifications depending on the number of hours per week for which they are employed.  Only in-class teaching hours are included in the calculation.

Temporary Academics may also be assigned non-teaching duties (e.g., curriculum development work, program/course coordination).  The hours worked are not included in any of the categories below and are paid on a hour-for-hour basis.

Part-Time Academics

  • Employed up to and including 6 hours per week

  • Not covered by any provisions of the Collective Agreement

  • Paid on an hourly basis, at a rate determined by the hiring department

Partial-Load Academics

  • More than 6 and up to and including 12 hours per week

  • Covered by some provisions of the Collective Agreement including pay-in-lieu of vacation (which is factored into the hourly wage, as per Article 26.02A), progression through established salary grids (Article 26.04), insured group benefits in some cases (Article 26.06), payment for work scheduled on statutory holidays, and sick leave (Article 26.08B)

  • Subject to the payment of union dues

Sessional Academics

  • Employed more than 12 hours per week

  • Meant to be temporary replacements for full-time teachers, and as such are restricted in the period of time at which they can maintain this status - a sessional teacher may only teach to a maximum of 10 months in a rolling 24-month period before they must return to either partial-load or part-time status

  • Sessional employees are not covered by any provisions of the Collective Agreement

  • Paid on either an hourly or weekly basis, as determined by their department
