Vacation - Academic Staff

As per Directive D14 (Vacation Policy), it is the policy of the College to ensure that each employee benefits from the full utilization of each year's vacation entitlement in a timely fashion.  For complete details, consult Article 15 of the Academic Collective Agreement and Directive D14.

If you have questions regarding your vacation that are not addressed below, please contact Liz Smid.

NOTE: As per the Joint Insurance Committee (effective June 2002), sick leave may not be taken during scheduled vacation periods.  This includes short-term and long-term disability.  The regular vacation period is always deemed to have been taken.

Vacation Entitlements

Generally speaking, vacation credits must be earned before they can be used by the employee.  All full-time Academic employees who have completed one full academic year's service with the College shall be entitled to a vacation of two months (43 business days) as scheduled by the College.  If the employee has less than one year's service, their vacation will be prorated accordingly.

For Academic staff, vacation accumulation is based on a September 1 to August 31 reference period.  Vacation does not accrue while not in the College's active employ, e.g., while on Professional Development/Sabbatical Leave.

Scheduling of Vacation

All vacation is scheduled by the College, in an effort to best accommodate employee needs and operational requirements.  As per Article 15.02, employees will be notified of their vacation period at least 4 weeks prior to its commencement.  The College will take into consideration the maintenance of proper and efficient staffing.

Should conflict arise amongst employees with respect to their choice of vacation times, consideration will be given to staffing requirements and/or length of service.

Once the vacation period has been established, changes may occur due to reasons outside of the College's control, or by mutual agreement.  Changes of fifteen (15) days or more will require two levels of approval in order to be actioned by Human Resources.

The 11th Month

According to Article 15.01B, a teacher assigned to teach for an additional month ("11th Month") over the normal teaching schedule shall be entitled to receive a vacation of one (1) month as scheduled by the College plus a bonus of 10% of the employee's base salary for the completion of the additional assignment.  In the event that teacher does not work the full 11th month, their bonus will be pro-rated appropriately.

A faculty member who teaches is a continuous program will not be required to teach for more than 12 consecutive months without a scheduled vacation of at least one month.
