Vacation - Support Staff

As per Directive D14 (Vacation Policy), it is the policy of the College to ensure that each employee benefits from the full utilization of each year's vacation entitlement in a timely fashion.  For complete details, consult Article 11 of the Support Staff Collective Agreement (2005-2008) and Directive D14.

NOTE: If hospitalization occurs during the regularly scheduled vacation period, the department may change those hospitalized vacation days to sick leave as per Article 11.5 of the Support Staff Collective Agreement.  Proof of hospitalization may be required.

If you have questions regarding vacation that are not addressed below, please contact Liz Smid.

Scheduling of Vacation

All vacation is scheduled by the College, in an effort to best accommodate employee needs and operational requirements.  As per Article 11.5, employees must put forth vacation requests no later than March 1 of the current vacation year.  The manager will then confirm or deny these requests in writing no later than March 15.

Should conflict arise amongst employees with respect to their choice of vacation times, consideration will be given to staffing requirements and/or length of service.

Once the vacation period has been established, any changes to the schedule will require the written approval of the manager.  Changes of fifteen (15) days or more will require two levels of approval in order to be actioned by Human Resources.  Should the employee wish to return to work during the vacation period, they must obtain written approval from their manager.

Carry-Over

In accordance with Article 11.6 of the Collective Agreement, an employee may carry over up to three (3) weeks, or fifteen (15) working days, of vacation to the immediately following vacation year at a time that is satisfactory to the College.

If an employee requests that vacation days be rescheduled as a result of in-patient hospital treatment and the College is unable to reschedule in that vacation year, the employee may apply in writing to carry these days over in excess of the maximum.
