topGreetings!

Throughout our travels and recruitment activities, both Susan and I have found that there is a growing interest for our "green" programs.

In light of recent global events, the need for more environmentally conscious and responsible ways of doing things is developing quickly around the world, and we are proud to inform you about Algonquin's leading position in the field of sustainability.

For a few years now, Algonquin has strived to incorporate environmental, social and economic sustainability in its programs, teaching, research and processes. Only a few days ago, Algonquin became the second college in Ontario to sign the Association of Canadian Community College's (ACCC) Pan-Canadian Protocol for Sustainability.

Through a variety of programs and practices, we want to provide our graduates with environmental best practices, so that they can in turn apply them to the business practices of their communities, here in Canada, or back in their home countries.

Welcome to Sustainable Algonquin! Please visit our "green" website and learn about our two ground-breaking Graduate Programs in Green Business and Green Architecture below.

Until next time, take good care of yourself!

Warm Regards,

Graduate student D'Arcy Pascal, a recent graduate of Algonquin College's Business Marketing program has opted to continue her studies in the new Graduate Certificate program in Green Business Management

This groundbreaking program is the first of its kind in Canada and is all about protecting the environment, while ensuring that businesses grow and make a profit.

"When it comes to protecting the environment, it is all about the 3 "P's": "People, the Planet, and Profit"." Founder and coordinator of the Graduate Program, Adrienne Armstrong is confident that this graduate study option will give "individuals the abilities to become "agents of change" with the credentials behind them."

Like most Graduate Certificates at Algonquin, the program includes a course in which students create a professional business plan that meets the highest industry standards and is ready for submission to a lending institution. Students have to present their plan to industry specialists as a final viability test.

Through various case studies, field work and independent research projects, graduate students acquire the language, framework, and tools necessary to be successful in the real world.

In a recent TV interview about this innovative program, D'Arcy stated that "all the businesses right now are slowly but surely turning themselves towards more sustainable practices, and I know that this Graduate Program, combined with my background in Marketing, will be a great combination and put me in a leading position on the job market".

And she is not the only one to think so: the Graduate Certificate in Green Business Management program at Algonquin, which will start in September 2009 is already half full...

The Graduate program offers students an opportunity to broaden their existing skills to compete in the burgeoning field of alternative technologies related to eco-friendly (green) architecture.

Students are exposed to a specialized range of technologies that reduce the environmental impact of human habitation and commercial activity. Courses in materials and methods designed to provide sustainable energy conservation improvements, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and to harness the energy resources of the sun, wind and water are featured.

Design factors related to eco-friendly construction such as building orientation to maximize the use of renewable resources and the use of renewable building materials build on the students' existing knowledge base.

The field of green architecture is a natural result of the growth of building technology. Increases in the cost of carbon-based fuels and an increased awareness of their impact on the environment make this program an attractive option for current and graduate students of Architectural Technology programs. The program builds capacity and adds depth to the knowledge of students and workers in this field allowing them to specialize in, or broaden, their expertise.

CHIGrow Green at Algonquin!

World Cafés: Quest for a sustainable Algonquin begins...
by Caitlin Kenny, Algonquin Times, March 12, 2009

It's 2035. Algonquin is a sustainable institution. But what does it look like?

To answer this question, members of the college community gathered at café-style discussions during the second week of March.

Becoming sustainable is a key component of the college's strategic plan for the coming years. To help achieve this goal, Algonquin has hired a consulting company to formulate a sustainability plan. An important first step of the consultant's work is to gather input from students, faculty, staff and members of the public

Ideas about solar panels, organic food and improved recycling were among the many that immerged as participants shared their ideas. "What tends to happen is people's conversations about sustainability start with the environment", said consultant Jeremy Murphy. "That's an easy starting point. I'm hoping it will evolve into societal and economic sustainability as well."

Algonquin's Green Achievementsgreen_community

Algonquin has already benefited from some steps taken to reduce its impact on the environment. Last February marked the completion of a $6-million construction project that began in September 2006. The goal of the project was to reduce the colleges' $3 million in annual energy expenditures by targeting savings in electricity, gas and water.

Another project that is intended to pay for itself in the long-run is currently underway. The Centre for Construction Trades and Building Sciences video  is scheduled to open in September 2011 with gold-level certification form the Canadian Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system.

All these sustainability projects are part of the college's commitment to the Talloires Declaration, an international agreement to environmental citizenship that Algonquin signed in 2007, when it became the first Canadian College to make the declaration.

In the NEWS: Algonquin College one of the first colleges in Ontario to sign national protocol

Wednesday, April 22, Ottawa - Algonquin College became the second college in Ontario to sign the Association of Canadian Community College's (ACCC) Pan-Canadian Protocol for Sustainability.

"Caring for the environment is part of our commitment to caring for our students," says Algonquin's President Robert Gillett. "We will continue to be a leader in sustainable practices in an effort to instill environmental best practices into our graduates so they can be agents of change in their personal and professional lives."

This national protocol calls for colleges to integrate principles of sustainability into curriculum; develop an institutional sustainability plan; incorporate sustainability practices in operations such as green standards for buildings, use alternate energy sources and energy efficient transportation; and more.
