The best way to connect with new friends and adapt to Algonquin College is to get involved in events, activities and more.


International Peer Mentors (IPMs)

Are you a new or returning student? Would you like to connect with an International Peer Mentor to help you connect to student life and to events on and off campus?

If you are interested in joining the program as a Mentor for the Winter 2024 semester, please fill out the following form: https://forms.office.com/r/h7ntwx3Y0h

International Peer Mentors are students in level 2 and up that volunteer their time to assist new international students during their transition to life at Algonquin College and Ottawa. International peer mentors are a great resource for new international students and can offer information and support to students on campus. This program is open to all full-time enrolled students that are in their second semester or higher who are in good academic-standing at Algonquin College.

Role of International Peer Mentors

  • Meet, motivate and engage with new and/or returner international students to create a socially successful environment while assisting in assimilating students to life in Canada.
  • Help new students transition into life at Algonquin College
  • Provide new students with information which can help them succeed in their studies
  • Answers questions about your program and college life
  • Connected students to college resources and services
  • Help new students develop friendships and become part of the College community
  • Promote on campus clubs, events and activities
  • Encourage students to participate in events and activities (On/off campus)
  • Provide your mentee with an idea of what is expected of a student at AC and what a student may expect from their experience in a new environment
  • Network and meet new people

What are the benefits of being an International Peer Mentor?

  • In addition to the satisfaction of helping out a new international student and maybe making a new friend, you can use your experience to enhance your résumé/CV.
  • Hours worked volunteering can be used towards your co-curricular record.
  • Enhance your leadership skills.

Events and Workshops

Workshops are designed to help you. We have a variety of workshops designed to assist you throughout your studies at Algonquin. These range from Academic to Employment to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) support. Check our Events Calendar for upcoming dates. We will also send you reminders to your Algonquin Live email address. We will keep you up to date with events hosted by the International Education Centre.


Volunteer/Co-Curricular Record

One of the best ways to get involved is to volunteer. You will meet new friends, open your network and gain valuable skills, which you can add to your resume. Your Co-Curricular Record is a an official non-academic record of your volunteer, leadership an other college related activities.

We have hundreds of recognized activities available for students to choose from and we continue to accept new activity requests each day. The Co-Curricular Record year is defined from May 1 – April 30 and is not retroactive.

Visit the AC Hub to find out how you can get involved. They can help you connect with a Student Navigator, events and activities on and off campus and so much more.


Clubs and Communities

Clubs and Communities are a great way to meet like-minded students and heighten your experience at Algonquin College.

Do you have an idea for a club or community that does not exist?

Start your own. You can apply for funding from the Students’ Association to start your own club.

Not getting emails from the IEC?

Update your personal email at the Registrar’s Office or contact us here: https://www.algonquincollege.com/ro/askus/. Please include your full name, student number and the email address you prefer. You will also receive important emails from Algonquin on your AC live email. Be sure to check both your inbox and spam/junk folders.
