Science without Borders (SwB) Program

Algonquin College welcomes 11 Brazilian students to study at the College through the “Science without Borders” (SwB) program. This will be the first ever cohort of SwB students at Algonquin College.

Funded by the Brazilian Government, the SwB scholarship program was launched in July 2011. The program aims to send 101,000 Brazilian students to study internationally primarily in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by 2015. CAPES, the administering government agency in Brazil, has an agreement in place with the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC), and ACCC placed the students who were coming to Canada in various colleges based on academic program match and capacity. The Brazilian students are upper year students from a variety of science, technology and engineering programs in Brazil.

Under the program, students from a variety of institutions across Brazil will study at Algonquin for 12-18 months. Their program will include a combination of academic study and a practicum as well as English language studies, dependent on their level of English. All students arriving in October will be beginning with English language studies. When they begin the academic portion of their stay, the majority of the students will be studying in the School of Advanced Technology or Algonquin Centre of Construction Excellence, and one will be in the School of Media and Design.

More SwB students are expected to arrive in January and March.
