Student Life - Work Opportunities

There are several opportunities for international students to work in Canada. The following list provides an explanation of each type of work. For more details on the programs approved by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, please visit the website provided below.

On-Campus Work

Students are eligible to seek part-time employment on campus where they study as long as they are registered as full-time students. Although international students may look for work on-campus, the jobs are few and may not be available. Students should not arrive in Canada expecting to find jobs on campus. Students who are in academic programs and who complete the first six months of their studies in good standing, are eligible to apply for Off-Campus Work Permits.

Off-Campus Work

Students registered in full-time academic studies and who have completed a minimum of 6 months of study in good academic standing are eligible to apply for work permits allowing them to accept off-campus employment up to 20 hours per week during the school year and 40 hours per week during school breaks.

Co-operative Work

Students who are registered into Co-op programs will be provided the option of applying for work experience in their field of study. Algonquin College will assist students by providing co-op preparation classes and in identifying potential employers. Students must maintain an overall GPA of 3 to qualify for Co-op placement.

Field Work

Field is an integral part of many programs at Algonquin College. Students are required to complete field work with local agencies or companies as a part of the curriculum. Students in field work do not earn salary but gain valuable work experience which can be useful when seeking post-graduate employment.

Graduate Work Opportunities

Graduates of Algonquin programs are eligible to work in Canada for a period of 2 years if the employment is related to their field of studies. Graduates of one-year certificates or post-graduate programs may only apply for one-year of related work experience. Please visit the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website. Back to top
