N: Drive
  • This is the same drive that you would see while logged into a computer at the College. This drive is also available from home and therefore has been included in the Citrix MetaFrame application.
  • To open a document from your N: drive, while in the Open dialogue box, click on My Computer. At this point you will see a dialogue box such as the following.

  • This dialogue box lets you set the access level you would like the Citrix MetaFrame application to have on your local files and folders. In this case, the permission does not matter as the N: drive is located on a server at the College. Press Ok to continue.
  • You will now see a list of drives. Your N: drive is the one that starts with Home and which ends with (N:).

  • Double click this drive to enter your N: drive.
  • At this point you should see all your files, just as you see them at the College.

Local Drive
  • It is possible to open a file from a drive local to the computer you are using (such as the C: drive).
  • To do this, while in the application's Open dialogue, click on My Computer. At this point, a dialogue box will appear asking you to confirm file access permissions.

  • This dialogue box is very important. In order to open a document on the local hard drive, we must give the Citrix MetaFrame application Read Access. Note: To be able to save the document as well, we must choose Full Access.
  • Once this has been done, press ok to see a list of the available drives.

  • This is a list of the hard drives available on your computer. It includes your C: drive, any other local drives and also, any mapped drives you may have (such as your N: drive).
  • In this example, we are going to open a file on the C: drive. To do this, we must look at the list of local drives and locate the drive that has "C$" at the beginning. In this case it is: "C$ on 'Client' (V:)".
  • To locate any of your other drives, simply check the letter at the beginning (before the $).
  • Double click the drive and we can now choose a location on C: from which to open the file.

File Access Permissions
  • You may have noticed that when you try to save or open a file, you are presented with a dialogue box asking you to set file access permissions. In the instructions above, the proper permissions have been listed but should you choose an incorrect permission, this section will detail the results.
  • Let us say, for example, that we would like to open a file on the C: drive. We would choose My Computer from the Open dialogue box and be presented with the following:

  • Here we accidentally click Ok having forgotten to set the permission to Read or Full Access.
  • At this time, we will be presented with the choice of local drives as in the example above.

  • Should we then double click the C: drive, we will be presented with this error:

  • At this point there is not much that we can do. To give the proper permission we will have to click Ok on this error and then close the application we are using. Once this has been done, we must log out of the Citrix MetaFrame application site and then log back in. We will then be able to set the proper permission for file access.
