N: Drive
- This is the recommended location to save a file to. This drive can be accessed while at the College and
also while at home. This drive also has the added bonus of being backed up each night.
- To save to the N: Drive, while in the Save dialogue box, choose My Computer. At this point, a dialogue
box such as the following will most likely appear.
- This dialogue box will let us determine the permission the Citrix MetaFrame application has on local files
and folders. In this case, it does not matter what we choose as the N: drive is located on a server at
the College. For a more detailed description, see the section below on saving a file to a Local Drive.
- Once we have made a choice on access level, we press Ok to continue. At this point we will see our N: drive
and can simply double click it to save the file on it.

Local Drive
- It is possible to save a file to a drive local to the computer you are using (such as the C: drive).
- To do this, while in the application's Save dialogue, click on My Computer. At this point, a dialogue
box will appear asking you to confirm file access permissions.
- This dialogue box is very important. In order to save a document to the local hard drive, we must give
the Citrix MetaFrame application Full Access.
- Once this has been done, press ok to see a list of the available drives.
- This is a list of the hard drives available on your computer. It includes your C: drive, any other
local drives and also, any mapped drives you may have (such as your N: drive).
- In this example, we are going to save to the C: drive. To do this, we must look at the list of local
drives and locate the drive that has "C$" at the beginning. In this case it is: "C$ on 'Client' (V:)".
- To locate any of your other drives, simply check the letter at the beginning (before the $).
- Double click the drive and we can now choose a location on C: to save the file.

File Access Permissions
- You may have noticed that when you try to save or open a file, you are presented with a dialogue box asking
you to set file access permissions. In the instructions above, the proper permissions have been listed but
should you choose an incorrect permission, this section will detail the results.
- Let us say, for example, that we would like to open a file on the C: drive. We would choose My Computer from
the Open dialogue box and be presented with the following:
- Here we accidentally click Ok having forgotten to set the permission to Read or Full Access.
-
- At this time, we will be presented with the choice of local drives as in the example above.
- Should we then double click the C: drive, we will be presented with this error:
- At this point there is not much that we can do. To give the proper permission we will have to click
Ok on this error and then close the application we are using. Once this has been done, we must log out
of the Citrix MetaFrame application site and then log back in. We will then be able to set the proper
permission for file access.
