| Algonquin College - Using Applications with Citrix MetaFrame |
|
|
| First Time? |
- If this is your first time logging into Cirtix (on the computer you are currently using) or if you
have just restarted the browser after installing the Citrix MetaFrame plugin, you might notice that the
Message Center still says you are missing the necessary plugin. You might also notice that their
is now an information bar at the top of the page which reads, "The previous webpage might require the
following add-on: 'Citrix ICA Client Object (ActiveX Win32)' from 'Citrix Systems, Inc. (unverified
publisher)'. Click here to allow it to run..."
- This is because we must still tell the browser that it is ok to use the plugin. To continue, right
click on the information bar and choose, "Run ActiveX Control".
- After doing this, a dialogue box will appear asking if you would like to run the ActiveX Control.
Once again, we need to choose, "Run".
- We are now ready to login and use an application.

| Algonquin Application Farm |
- The Algonquin Application Farm is the name given to the collection of applications that can be run
via the Citrix MetaFrame plugin.
- Notice, in the screenshot above, that there are three folders and five applicaiton icons. The folders represent
groups of applications. Simply click on the folder to view and run the applications inside. In this
case we will click on "Microsoft Office 2007".
- We are now inside the "Microsoft Office 2007" folder. Here we see that there are a number of icons,
similar to the icons in the Application Farm. These represent the applications. In this folder we
have the group of applications that make up the Microsoft Office 2007 suite.

| Running an Application |
- For this example, we will run Microsoft Word 2007. To do this we simply click on the icon.
- This will cause a little dialogue box to pop up informing us that the application is starting up.
- If this is the first time you are using a particular application, the following dialogue box might appear.
This is letting you know that a server is requesting access to your local files (files stored on the hard
drive of the computer you are currently using). This dialogue box may also appear when saving or opening
a document.
- We have 3 choices: No Access, Read Access and Full Access.
No Access: You do not wish to let the server access the files on your hard
drive. This means that you will not be able to open files store on your local hard drive, only those
stored on your N: drive.
Read Access: You will allow the server to read the files on your hard
drive but not to modify them. This means that you will be able to open files store on your hard drive
but you will have to save any changes to your N: drive.
Full Access: You will allow the server to have full access of the
files on your hard drive. This means that you will be able to open and modify any files stored locally
on your hard drive.
- Once you have decided the access level, press Ok to continue.
- At this point we will once again see a small dialogue box appear indicating that the application is starting.
- Once the application has finished loading, it will appear on the screen and be available for use.

| Back to the Farm |
- When you are finished using an application and have closed it or if you have entered into a folder and wish
to go back, simply press the Up or Home icons.
Home: This will bring you back to the Algonquin Application Farm.
Up: This will bring you up one folder (in this case, back to the Farm
as well).
