What is an E-Mail

  • Email is short for Electronic Mail. A typed message is entered into an Email program, and sent to the desired recipient. In most Email programs, there are generally 3 different boxes to be filled in before the message can be sent.
      • The email address of the recipient
      • The subject of the Email
      • The message

What is an E-Mail Address

  • An Email address is an identifying mark for where mail should be sent to a specific user. It works just like your home address. When someone writes you a letter, they need to include your home address so that the post office knows where to send the letter. Likewise, the Email servers need to know where to send the Email.

Email addresses come in their own format, and generally look something like this: name@servername.com The 'name' portion is the recipient's username that he/she uses to log into their mail server. The 'servername' portion is the name of the web server (also referred to as a 'domain') that the user logs into. A common example is 'Hotmail.com'. Someone named 'Suzy Smith' might log into Hotmail.com, and have an Email address to the effect of: suzysmith@hotmail.com

How does an E-Mail work

  • Email can be thought of as being similar to writing and ordinary letter. The letter is written, the destination address is written on the envelope, and the letter is sent to the post office. From the post office, it is sorted and delivered to the recipient. Similarly, Email is written, and marked with the destination email address. The mail is sent to the recipient's Email server, and is downloaded by the recipient the next time they log into their Email program. It is important to note that when sending an Email, the message is not sent directly to the user's computer. Instead, it is sent to the internet mail server that the recipient logs onto to retrieve his/her mail. When they log into their mail server, the message is downloaded to their computer.

What is forward

  • A forward is a message that has been received by someone, and re-sent to someone else, or a group of people. Forwarded messages often carry the tag: FWD: in the subject line to indicate a forwarded message. Also, on the mail server, you can enable "Email forwarding". This is a service that allows you to automatically have mail forwarded from your Algonquin Email account to an alternate Email address.

What is a CC

  • CC stands for "Carbon Copy". Sometimes there is an optional extra box to fill in before sending an Email. This box is usually labeled "CC". Extra Email addresses can be entered in this box, and recipients at those email addresses will also receive the message.

What is an attachment

  • An attachment is a separate file that is sent along with an Email. Pictures are a common form of attachment. For example, if someone decided to send a picture of themselves to someone else, they could 'attach' an image file on their computer of themselves to an Email message to the recipient. The image is then sent to the server, along with the message and is downloaded when the recipient checks his/her mail.
