Computers for the New Student

Most students get an Algonquin network account and this allows you to use the computers in the labs. The computers have the software you need to complete your assignments. You may also use a laptop. PDAs are not supported for students.

Note: Do not save your files to the hard drive in student labs, in most cases the computers are set up to remove your files as soon as you log off.

Computers for the Student

Software - Not every lab has the same software, see the list. Remember that the software gets reset and cleaned up when you log off so never save your work files to the hard drive. They WILL be deleted.

Hardware - The computers in each lab have been configured for the software and other academic needs. It is upgraded regularly to maintain usability.

Laptops - You can get information about wireless, printers and using your laptop in the College by visiting this link.

Computers for the New Staff

As staff and faculty at Algonquin College you will have access to computer facilities in your department or office area. You can also use the student labs. Whether the computer and printer are yours alone to use, or you have shared facilities, your department will provide what is needed for your position.

For the purposes of this document computers include desktops, laptops and PDAs. There are wireless services available but not guaranteed. Use a network cable if the wireless signal is not adequate.

ITS provides support for all College owned equipment but provides very limited support for personally owned equipment. Please see your department if you have special requirements.

The College has a standard configuration for computers which is what you will normally be provided.

Hardware

The standard hardware may be upgraded at your department's expense or as part of a College-wide project. If it is upgraded and fails ITS will only provide the College standard as a replacement. For example if you upgrade to a 20" monitor which later fails ITS will only provide the standard 17" monitor as a repair.

Software

The computer will have a standard "image" or software setup including the current MS Windows and Office suite as well as protection software( virus, spam, firewall, etc). This is set up by ITS. Please see your department if you have special requirements and then ITS can install it if needed. The computer will be configured for one or more users to access their email and other required systems. See more on software.

ITS and Algonquin are committed to maintaining legally licensed software through-out the College. Any software installation must be purchased by the department, ITS, or be part of a College site license. Software Site

Help

All training will be provided by your department or through Algonquin's Professional Development. The most potent form of assistance available to you is the Help feature of the software. It has come a very long way and companies have realized the value of enabling a client to get the answers they need with a few simple clicks. Learn to use it, you will be glad you did.

When maintenance is required you can reach ITS through the contacts shown on the left margin of this, and all ITS web pages. For more information on this see Getting Help.

Evergreen

The desktop computers are continually upgraded in a cycle of 3 years to keep them usably current. This process is called Evergreening. Older computers are used for parts or sold in the regular basement sales which are managed and announced by Algonquin's Fixed Assets department. There are some great deals.

Reporting Problems

When a computer in a lab or office is not functioning properly you should report it to ITS for servicing. Getting Help . It there is a note or banner on the PC or printer it should have an ITS work order number indicating it has been reported and is awaiting service. If so then please use a different computer.

Backups and restores

You are responsible for doing you own backups on your computer. whether it is a College computer or personally owned. Whether a laptop, PDA or Desktop. If you don't do it and your computer is damaged or lost then you have lost everything that was on it. Are you ready for that?

Windows has a built-in backup program which may not have all of the features but is free and usable.
