| STEP 1 - Add Dial-Up Capability to Windows 98/ME |
- Open the Control Panel by clicking:
- Start -> Settings -> Control Panel
- Double-click on the Add/ Remove Programs icon.

- In the Add/Remove Programs Properties window, click
on the
- Windows Setup tab.
- Double-click on the Communications component.
|
- If Dial-Up Networking is already checked, select Cancel, close all windows and proceed to
Step
2.
- If Dial-Up Networking is not checked, click on the
box to the left of Dial-Up Networking so that a check mark appears
in the box.
- Click on OK and then Apply to save these
changes.
- You may be prompted to fill in a Computer Name and Workgroup for this connection.
- Computer Name: Userid (user0001)
- Workgroup: WOODROFFE, PEMBROKE, PERTH, or ELGIN
- If you are prompted to insert your Windows CD and/or restart
your computer, do so.

| STEP 2 - Verify TCP/IP is installed |
- Open the Control Panel by clicking:
- Start -> Settings -> Control Panel
- Double-click on the Network icon.

- Under the Configuration tab, there is a list of installed network components.
|
- In the Select Network Component Type window, click Protocol, then click the Add button
|
- In the Select Network Protocol window:
- Under Manufacturers, select Microsoft.
- Under Network Protocols select TCP/IP.
- Click OK to install TCP/IP

| STEP 3 -Remove Unneeded Network Components |
- Now that you have TCP/IP installed, it’s time to remove unneeded network components.
- Left-click on Client for NetWare Networks and select the Remove button.
- Left-click on IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol and select the Remove button.
- Left-click on NetBEUI and select the Remove button.

- The only remaining components needed for the connection are: Client for Microsoft Networks, Dial-Up Adapter, and TCP/IP.
- Remove any other unneeded components that appear in the list.
- Click OK to save these settings.
- If you are prompted to insert your Windows CD and/or restart your computer, do so.

| STEP 4 - Create a Dial-Up Icon |
- For Windows 98 Users
- Double click the Dial-Up Networking folder located in my Computer
|
- For Windows ME Users
- Start button > Settings > DialUp Networking
|
- In the Dial-Up Networking folder, double-click Make new connection.

- Click finish to create the dial-up icon.

| STEP 5 - Modify the Dial-Up Icon |
- The dial-up icon for Algonquin should appear in the Dial-Up Networking folder.
- Right-Click on the Algonquin icon, and select Properties.

- For Windows 98 Users
- In the Algonquin icon properties, select the Server Types tab.
- Under Advanced Options, verify that Log on to network and Enable Software Compression are both checked.
- Under Allowed network protocols, make sure that the only one checked is TCP/IP.
- Click on the TCP/IP Settings button to continue.
- For Window 98 users, click Ok on all open windows to save these settings and go to Connect to Algonquin - Step six".

- For Windows ME Users
- In the Algonquin icon properties, select the Networking tab.
- Under Advanced options, verify that Enable Software Compression is checked.
- Under Allowed network protocols, make sure the only one checked is TCP/IP.
- Click on the TCP/IP Settings button to continue.
- For Windows ME, continue with next step before going to "Connect to Algonquin" - Step six

Click the Security tab.
- Under Authentication, make sure that User Name contains your userID (user000#) and that Domain contains either Woodroffe, Perth, Pembroke or Elgin (depending on the campus you are attending).
- Under Advanced security options, make sure that Log on to network is the only option checked.
- Click OK to save your settings

| STEP 6 - Connect to Algonquin |
- Double-Click on the Algonquin icon you created in the Dial-Up Networking folder to connect to Algonquin.
- TIP: Drag and drop the Algonquin icon to the desktop to create a shortcut for easy access.

TIP: Check Save Password if you don’t want to re-enter the password each time you connect.

TIP: If you subscribe to Call Waiting, click the Dial Properties button, check This Location has call waiting and select “*70,” from the drop-down box to disable it.

You can now launch your web browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) to browse the internet. The default copy of Internet Explorer included with Windows can be found in the Start menu: Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Internet Tools -> Internet Explorer
