Dial Up - Windows XP

 

STEP 1 - Create a Dial-Up Icon
  • Click the Start Menu, click on Control Panel. Select Network Connections.

  • In the Network Connections window, double-click on the icon labeled “New Connection Wizard”.

  • This will open the New Connection Wizard.

    • Click Next to continue.

  • Select Connect to the Network at my work place.
    • Click Next to continue.

  • Select Dial-up connection.
    • Click Next to continue.

  • Enter a name for the connection (this name can be anything you choose).
    • Click Next to continue.

  • Enter the proper phone number for your location (please note long distance charges apply).

  • Click Next to continue.

  • You can chose to share this with other uses on your system.
    • Click Next to continue.

  • Click Finish.

STEP 2 - Configure Network Settings.
  • After you complete the Network Connections Wizard, the Connect window should appear. (You can also open this your Algonquin Dialup connection from the Control Panel. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network and Dialup Connections. Then find your Algonquin Dialup icon and double-click it.)
    • Click on the Properties button to configure your network settings

  • Click the Network tab.

    • In the Networking tab, under This connection uses the following items, verify that Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and Client for Microsoft Networks are checked.
    • Click once on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to highlight it then click the Properties button

  • Make sure the radio button “Obtain an IP address automatically
  • Select the radio button”Use the following DNS server addresses
    • Please enter the following numbers:
      • Preferred DNS server: 205.211.30.22
        Alternate DNS server: 205.211.30.21
    • Click on the Advanced button to continue.

  • This displays the Advanced TCP/IP Settings window. You will see 3 tabs labeled: General, DNS, and WINS.

  • Click the DNS tab.

    • Select the radio button “Append these DNS suffixes (in order):” 
    • Click the Add button and type in ottawa.ad.algonquincollege.com
  • Click the Add button again and type in algonquincollege.com

  • Now click the WINS tab.
  • Under WINS server addresses, in order of use, click the Add button.
    • Type in 205.211.30.22 and then 205.211.30.21.
  • Click on OK on all open windows to save these settings.

STEP 3 - Connect to Algonquin. 
  • The “Connect” box should appear. If you do not see the below screen, click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network and Dialup Connections. Then double-click your Algonquin Dialup icon.
  • Fill in your Algonquin username and password to connect, the same as you would login at the college.

    TIP:
    Check save password if you don't want to re-enter the password each time you connect.
  • Click Dial to connect to Algonquin.
    • You should hear the modem dial the phone number
