Secure Portal Global Support                specs    faq    glossary

The Secure Portal is an alternative to VPN for secure remote connection. It is an easier and smoother method to connect to College services from home without VPN while using Windows, Mac or Linux and a variety of browsers - very accommodating. At this point only a few applications are available. For example you would still use VPN for your N drive.

Is Secure Portal different from VPN?

Yes, there are a couple of differences.

  • It is more accommodating for different operating systems, browsers and home networks
  • At the moment only staff can use the Secure Portal.
  • It does not yet grant access to everything that VPN does. See the chart below.

Using Secure Portal - https://secure.algonquincollege.com

  • Make sure you do not have VPN or AlgVPN running. It is OK if they are installed, just not connected.
  • Secure Portal will connect you to the Secure1 or Secure 2 server depending on loading.
  • As of August 6th staff can access Secure Portal. More services may be added with time.
  • As with VPN, Secure Portal can not be accessed inside the College, only remotely.
  • Students and retirees can not use the Secure Portal.
  • Max 500 connections.

Step One:

Using almost any browser and operating system (XP and IE7 are recommended), log into the secure site https://secure.algonquincollege.com. It appears similar to the Algvpn logon except the title in upper left is "Secure Portal". Use your regular network username and password.

Step Two:

Selecting an application (in this case OPS) displays the OPS screen for logon and use.

Notice the address bar indicates "secure1" rather than OPS. This is normal.

At this point you should also note that there is a Secure Portal navigation button floating at the top right (or left) of the screen (in red). It will fade slightly when the mouse is not over it. It will appear for any application opened through Secure Portal. There are three buttons:

Switch This button moves the navigation buttons to left or right side of the page
Home This button takes you back to the portal home page. Note that it logs you out of any Secure Portal application you are logged into.
Stop This Button disconnects Secure Portal and any applications running through it.
