| Algonquin WebVPN |
We have now implemented a new way of connecting to Algonquin College using VPN: WebVPN. This allows
you to connect to the VPN using your web browser instead of having to download and install a separate
program. The WebVPN works with any operating system.
|
| Starting the WebVPN Service |
- The first step in using the new WebVPN is to point your browser to:
http://algvpn.algonquincollege.com
- You should now see a login screen that looks like this one:
This screen is used to login to the WebVPN service. Please user your NT username and
password to log into the system. Note: This is the same password you would use to login to a
computer on the Algonquin campus.
- At this point, if you have already installed the VPN plug-in, the browser will flash through a
series of screens and pause for a second on a screen similar to the following.
- When the plug-in has finished starting, the screen will change to the one below.
This means that the browser was able to load the plug-in. You may not actually notice this
screen as the plug-in is set to close the browser automatically at this point and add the
following icon to those in the bottom right by the clock.
- Congratulations, you have now connected to Algonquin's WebVPN service. If your browser does not
close, it is safe to close it at this time (or simply to close the page that is currently open).
There is no requirement to have the browser open once the key appears by the clock.
- If this did not happen within about 30 seconds to a minute and the browser seems to have paused,
please read below as the browser might need to update it's Java Virtual Machine or install
the WebVPN plug-in.
|
| Installing the WebVPN plug-in - Java Virtual Machine |
- If this is the first time you have used the Algonquin WebVPN service then there are a few steps you
may have to perform before being able to use the plug-in.
- The first thing that the browser might run into that needs installation is the Java Virtual Machine.
It needs to be present and up to date for the Algonquin WebVPN to function properly. You'll know
this is the case if the browser stops while the message on the screen is "The installer is checking
your Java VM. Please wait..." and the bar at the top has a message similar to the one in the
picture below.
To proceed, simply right click on the yellow information bar (see image above) and allow Internet
Explorer to install the ActiveX Control by choosing "Install ActiveX Control..."
- At this point the loading process will continue and you will be prompted to install the actual
VPN plug-in itself. Please see the following section for details.
|
| Installing the WebVPN plug-in - Cisco SSL VPN Client |
- Before being able to use the Algonquin WebVPN service, a Cisco SSL VPN Client plug-in must be
installed into your browser. This plug-in allows the computer to start up the Java program it needs
to connect you to the College. If this has already been done, the program will automatically load
after you've pressed the Login button as stated above.
- If you do need to install the plug-in, the browser will pause on the screen
that says, "The installer is checking your Java VM. Please wait..." and the bar at the top will
have a message similar to that in the following image.
To proceed here, simply right click the information bar at the top and choose, "Run ActiveX Control".
This will tell Internet Explorer that you think this is safe and that it has permission to run the
plug-in each time it needs to.
- After allowing the ActiveX Control to be run, a box such as the one below will appear on the screen.
To continue here, please click on the button that says, "Run".
- Once this has been done and Internet Explorer as been granted permission to install the plug-in, the
screens will appear as they do in the first section above, "Starting the WebVPN Service"
