These accounts have access to the Plesk Control Panel where they can administer their sites. Plesk Link Algonquinhosting.ca - Client account - This account offers you Plesk to manage your web site configuration. Only people who use a personal Domain name will get a client account on this server. Login to Plesk Panel at https://yoursite.com:8443 with your client account. Algonquinhosting.ca - Webuser account - allows you to have web space and post your web page to the server with FTP. Everybody gets the webuser account but not all get a Client account. Algonquinstudents.ca - A web server for students to learn and use a web page. Auto Attendant - This is the voice based telephone directory assistance. You speak the name of the person or department you want to speak to and are then connected. Backup - To make a copy for archive in case something happens to the data on the original location. Sometimes special hardware or software is used. See also, Restore. BES - Blackberry Enterprise Server, found on Blackberries to synchronize email and information between desktop and mobile software. Blackberry - A PDA device which includes various features like telephone, email, GPS, Browser, etc. Blackboard - An application used by students and teachers to teach, test exchange files and other academic functions. - Link Boot - To start a device from an off state. It will go through a series of steps in order to be ready to use. CAOS - Is an instrument used by ITS and the College generally to notify people of significant system problems. - Link Citrix - Decomissioned Dec 2011 Cloud - Cloud refers to systems and services that are offered by companies outside of your own working environment. For example, Algonquin Live email is offered, housed and maintained by Microsoft outside of the college. It is a Cloud service. Whereas Blackboard is offered from within the college, and so, is not a cloud service. Communication Suite - Refers to Microsoft Office 2007. Connector - The Sun connector was the mechanism which synchronized Webmail, Outlook and your calendar. This has been replaced by our Exchange system. CTC - Corporate Technologies Committee, a group in the college that helps govern internal direction and decisions. Deepfreeze - This is an application on student lab PCs which resets the computers to a standard configuration after a person logs off. Note - Any file saved to C drive will be deleted when they log off. Dial-up - Using your analog phone line, a computer and a modem you dial an internet provider to access the Internet. Algonquin dial-up was decommissioned in the spring of 2010. Domain - A network area. For Algonquin the areas used to be divided between Perth, Pembroke and Woodroffe.. See Domain Consolidation below. Domain consolidation - The is a change to the network structure where the separate network sections for Pembroke domain, Perth domain and Woodroffe domain were merged into one. It was done for logistic reasons in 2009. Domain Registrar - The right to use a domain name is delegated by domain name registrars which are accredited by the ICANN, the organization charged with overseeing the name and number systems of the Internet. DPI - Dots Per Inch - this is a measurement of visual resolution. The more dots(pixels) per inch, the clearer and finer the image will appear. The cost of higher dpi is file size and loading time. Driver - A driver is a small program that helps Windows talk to a particular component like a mouse, a video card, a network card or a sound card. E-Classroom - These are labs set up with multimedia capability at the teacher's station. There may also be student machines in the room. Support is through ITS at ext 2500. - Link Educational Pricing - This is specially low pricing offered by vendors and manufacturers to educational institutions and students. Employee Number - A 5 digit number assigned to each Algonquin staff by HR . You can find it on your staff ID card. Ethernet - A type of connection cable used for network devices. At Algonquin it is used for computers and phones. Exchange - A Microsoft environment consisting of server, client, software and a network. It facilitates email, calendar and other organization and communication needs.
Format - To format is to structure something is a recognizable form. Formatting a hard drive will usually overwrite existing data. File formats refer to the function or structure of the file's data and is indicated by the three letter extension - .cpt, .doc, .exe. FTP - File Transfer Protocol is the method used to transfer files back and forth between a local and remote site. For example it can be used when posting web page work. You will have an account on the web server. G.A.L. - Global Address Lookup is a new directory lookup for exchange for phone or email. It does not include students in the listing. Genesis - The College student information system which holds schedules, courses and all student information. Genesis.net is the windows version. - Link Heat - A work order system used by ITS. It has been replaced by SDE. Helix - A media streaming server - Link High Speed Internet - Using your computer with an ethernet or wireless card you connect to your Internet Service Provider(ISP) through phone lines, cable tv lines, radio antenna, or satellite to gain access to a high speed internet connection. - high speed relative to dial-up. IMAP - Internet Message Access Protocol. A protocol used for sending email, generally leaves the email on the server IT Fee - A technology fee paid by most students each semester to help pay for accounts, computers, software, printing, networks and upgrades. - Link IVR - Interactive Voice Responder - This is the Algonquin phone system system that deals with you when you use the college CISCO phones or phone into the college. It handles your phone inputs and directs your call or inquiry. It brings up the service you need and you may hear it use voice to speak to you. - Link JES - Sun Java Enterprise System. This refers to the java system for mail that is used by Webmail and the connector.
Linux - A graphic version of the Unix operating system. Live@AC - Student email based on Live@edu which replaces Webmail - Link LDAP - Lightweight Directory Access Protocol - This is a way of enabling light querying of directories for information no matter what kind of a system they are on. For example email information or a phone number. Mac Address - This is a unique number stored on all network adapters. These numbers identify the device uniquely on the entire Internet. It could be in a computer, phone, printer, vending machine, camera or any other device which communicates on a network. It has digits 0-9 and letters a-f. (ie 001e7a25a412) Mobile Device - This includes laptops, smartphones and tablet devices where the user can rove from room to room. This is compared to a desktop computer which is static. myDesktop - A virtual desktop environment which hosts Algonquin software and can be accessed from anywhere with VPN. Implemented Nov 2010. - Link Network Share - An area on a network drive which users use for storage or sharing of data. - Link NT - Our Algonquin network is often referred to as NT. As in "use your NT password". This is a reference to the Microsoft name of the system. It is just another way of saying the Algonquin Network. O.C.R. - Optical Character Recognition - Converts a page of scanned text into editable text. Scanned text is normally just a picture of text, it is not the actual letters that the computer recognizes as an "h" or a "3". Oracle - A database system used at Algonquin for teaching. - Link Outage - An Outage is when a service or system is completely or partially unavailable for a time. It may be a planned outage for maintenance or and unforeseen incident resulting from a component failure or other unforeseen cause. - Link OWA - Outlook Web Access, the exchange replacement for Webmail. It is used by staff for email. PDA - Personal Digital Assistant, generally referring to a Blackberry. Also known as a "mobile device" PDF - Files in the format of Adobe Writer and Reader. Used for easy reading by all. http://get.adobe.com/reader/ PEAP - A wireless communication protocol - Link PeopleSoft - An application used by Algonquin by administration to manager finances, ordering and other tasks. - Link Plesk - A structured, easy-to-use, end-user control panel simplifies users hosting management experience. POP3 - A protocol used for sending email, generally removes the email from the server Print-To-Fax - Is a service which allows you to print from your computer directly to a fax device as one step faxing. Proof of Concept - Proof of concept is a short realization (or synopsis) of a certain method or idea(s) to demonstrate its feasibility, or a demonstration in principle, whose purpose is to verify that some concept or theory is probably capable of working. PST file - Personal Storage Table is a file used to store local copies of messages, calendar events, and other items within Microsoft software Quota - This refers to the maximum capacity that a user can have for their own use. For example a network share hard drive may be 100Gig divided into 100 one Gig user quotas. Registrar - An office in the college responsible for student enrollment. Restore - To retrieve a copy of data, usually from a backup. Sometimes special hardware or software is used. See also Backup. Ricoh device - The company Ricoh makes printers and Multi Function Devices which have a printer, scanner and fax built in. - Link Safe mode - A limited running mode for Microsoft Windows where not all features will be available. Safe mode is used for resolving technical problems SDE - Service Desk Express - This is the Algonquin work order system that logs requests for service or change. It is used by ITS, the computer store and other departments to server their clients. Scan-to-Email - Is a service which allows you to scan an image on a paper page and receive it via email. - Link Secure Portal - An alternative to VPN which allows you to connect to the College remotely. - Link Share - Smarterm - A terminal emulator which allows you to work with a server application as though you are using a "dumb terminal". Commonly used at Algonquin for Genesis. - Link SPAM - Electronic junk mail - Link Spyware - A program that installs itself on your computer in a secretive manner, then performs various exploitive functions. - Link Staging Domain - A subdomain area created to host development pages until approved, which is then moved into the top of the domain. EG: www.staging.algonquinhosting.ca Student Number - A number assigned to each Algonquin staff by the Registrar. You can find it on your student ID or any mail correspondence. Usually starts with 040 and has nine digits - ie 040-266-266.
