This network drive is activated when you log onto the College network. Connecting to it off-campus is a bit different and we will talk about it later.

Request for more - Staff can request more space but it may not always be approved. It depends on how much they have and how they are using it. We will always recommend backing up data to a cd or dvd and removing it from the server in order to reclaim space.

About Your Network Share

The files server has a small area dedicated to each individual or each department to store files and the amount of space for each will vary. Once you log onto the network you will be able to connect to this dedicated space to store files. We name the connection by letters for ease of use and this is called mapping. We map the letter N to the space on the server so we can use it easily and it will have a common reference name for all of us.

Most of the letters of the alphabet can be used. You may even be using an O drive or a T drive which might be mapped to a share used by your department. If the logon process does not map it for you it might have to manually mapped. This occasionally happens.

         shares

You must be connected to the Algonquin network to map your shares. Whether you are at the College, or at home running VPN, you must be on the network.

Checking Quota Level

Checking size at Woodroffe. Click on the icon in MyComputer and the details will be shown on the left. Or else right-click on the icon and go to properties.

Checking the size at Pembroke and Perth. Do not use the method above, it will give you incorrect information. You should open the drive, hit CTRL-A (for select all), then right-click the selected files and choose Properties. This will tell you how much of your quota you are using.

Backup and Restore - The backups are done each night and generally kept for two weeks. You can request ITS to do a restore of some or all of your files but you may be able to do it yourself.

To Request a restore: ITS needs your username, phone number, the server name you had the files on, when the last good copy existed, the file names, folders names and locations of those files so we get the right ones.

To Restore it yourself: Go to MyComputer and right click on the drive icon and select Properties. You may see a tab called "Previous Version" in which case you can choose the backup or area of backup that you want. Double-click a backup to open it for more selection.
