Telephones for the New Student         specs    faq    glossary

College telephones are VOIP and rely on the Algonquin network for functionality. This includes the labs, offices and residence rooms.

Long Distance - Residence

You can not dial long distance on most College phones. The exception is specially configured staff phones and phones in the Residence rooms where the student has requested this feature from their front desk. Also see toll free dialing.

College telephones are VOIP and rely on the network for functionality

Getting started - As new staff you will either:

  • inherit a phone
  • or get a new installation
  • perhaps use a locally shared phone
  • or get a mobility account which allows you to log into any phone as though it is your own.

You have to be set up with your name and voicemail account. Often this will be arranged by the office manager. Go to the next section for more details but for now here is a link for getting your voicemail account up and running once you have it.

Your Phone

VOIP

Voice Over IP (VOIP), or Internet Phone is becoming more common and Algonquin College adopted it a few years ago. It uses network lines and infrastructure to deliver phone service. The exception to this is fax lines which use the traditional analog lines like you have at home. More...

PDAs and Blackberries and I-Phones

These devices are used for email, notes, web browsing and phones. This section will talk briefly about the telephone function in Algonquin. Otherwise the PDA is considered a computer device. For PDA information go here.

Departmental Queues

When you call ITS you reach our support queue and the first available agent responds. There are several call centers like this in the College - Registrar, Financial Aid, College Operators, and more. These queues will be configured by ITS to serve high volume service centers.

Faxes

Faxes require an analog phone line like you have at home. This will be a special installation because the College uses ethernet for telephone rather than analog. Having an analog line installed has a cost (up to $700) so please consider this in your plans.

The fax device itself is not supported by ITS unless it is part of your Ricoh printer. You should contact the people who sold you the fax if you are having difficulties with the non-Ricoh device.
