Answers
How do I apply for an ESL course?
Click here to view the admission requirements.
When can I be tested to get into the right ESL level?
See our Testing Dates page for testing information (full-time and part-time programs only).  LINC students are not tested at Algonquin College.
Is there a difference between the Intensive and the International programs?
Yes.  The Intensive Program is for Canadian residents and the International Program is only for international students. There are also differences in course fees and scheduling.
How many hours per week will I spend in class?

In the Intensive Program, students spend 18 hours in class and 7 hours in the Multimedia Language Centre (2 hours with the teacher and 5 hours of independent work).

The International Program consists of 18 hours in class and 2 hours in the Multimedia Language Centre.  International students are also required to fulfill hours in "Independent Learning Projects", an academic enrichment program consisting of 20 hours of independent study to improve specific skills.

For part-time courses, number of hours of class vary, depending on the course.  LINC students spend 21 hours a week in class and 4 hours in the Multimedia Language Centre.

How many levels are there?

In the Intensive program, we offer 7 levels of study (Levels 2 to 8).  In the International program, we offer 8 levels of study. Level 1 is an introductory level.  In both Programs, levels 7 and 8 prepare the students  for academic study.

The part-time program offers courses at the intermediate and advanced levels. Many of these courses are specialized (e.g. TOEFL Preparation, Business Writing, Pronunciation, Communication Skills in Meetings).

The LINC program offers levels 3 to 5 as well as LINC Bridging.

What ESL level do I need to go into a regular Algonquin College Program?

Every program has different requirements.  Many programs require ESL Level 8, while other programs may not.  Find out what the admission requirements are by contacting department of the program you want to study.

Can I take LINC and ESL courses at the same time?

No, it is not possible because they are both full-time day programs.

Is there financial assistance for ESL students?

Canadian residents and newcomers may be eligible for financial assistance if they have spent at least one year in Ontario, if they show financial need, and if they have a Social Insurance Number.  For more information, please refer to the Ontario Student Bursary Plan (OSBP) or Algonquin's Financial Aid website.

Algonquin College does not provide financial assistance or scholarships to international students at this time.

Is there childcare service for ESL students?

For LINC students with children aged 24 months up to and including 5 years, there is a free Child-minding Centre at Algonquin College.

If you are not a LINC student, please contact the Early Learning Centre , which is Algonquin College's childcare service for staff and students.
