Can I enter the program without a university degree?

The TES/FL Certificate Program is a professional program and requires that students have an undergraduate degree.

What is the difference between TESL, TEFL, and TESOL?
There are various acronyms for the field of teaching English. TESL stands for Teaching English as a Second Language; TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language; and TESOL stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (also the name of a professional association).
Will the TES/FL Certificate qualify me to teach children?

Only individuals who meet the provincial qualifications to teach in the Canadian school system (i.e. Teacher's College Certificate) are allowed to teach children. Our program prepares individuals to teach to adult learners. However, you can teach children in many countries overseas, since different countries have different requirements in this area.

What is the job market like in ESL or EFL?

The TES/FL field reflects a constantly changing market in Canada and abroad. The Internet is one of the best ways to find out about job opportunities. There are hundreds of websites associated with TEFL and TESL.

For jobs in Canada:

1. Check the phone directory for language schools in the area.

2. Contact the local school boards & community colleges (Continuing/Adult Education Centres).

3. Use the Internet to find information. Here are two useful sites:

http://www.eslcafe.com/search/Jobs/Canada/

For jobs abroad:

1. Check the newspapers in the career section for advertisements.

2. Use the Internet to find information. For example:

http://www.hiteacher.com

3. Join listservs such as TESL -L and its sister listserv TESL-JB, which specialize in the global job market for EFL.

4. Attend TESL Conferences locally, provincially, and internationally. There is always a Job Fair at the conferences. Recruiters from around the world attend specifically to interview.
