English as a Second Language

The Language Institute offers an exciting English as a Second Language program designed to meet the needs of International students.

The Language Institute offers eight levels of full-time instruction (20 hours per week). International students who wish to improve their English language communication skills and/or prepare for college or university entrance will find a program suited to help them meet their objectives. On successful completion of Level 07 with a B+ average or Level 08 with a B average, graduates meet College English entrance requirements (additional program requirements may be necessary). Friendly, caring instructors provide a supportive environment for learning. All our professors are highly trained with undergraduate degrees and TESL certification.

The program consists of classroom instruction, and independent study.

Students have full access to the Multimedia Language Lab for independent and/or computer-assisted learning.

Students may choose to register in additional classes such as: TOEFL preparation, conversation classes, and business communication skills.

Fees:

$4,400 CAD for 16 weeks or $2,200 CAD per level (8 weeks). Fees are subject to change without notice. Fees include mandatory health insurance coverage as long as the International student remains in full-time studies.

Teachers of English as a Second / Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL)

Algonquin College's full-time TESL/TEFL Certificate program offers a combination of theory and practicum courses to prepare participants for English teaching positions in Canada(ESL) and foreign countries (EFL). Applicants must have a university degree in a related field such as: English or Sociology. As communication is an integral part of this program, applicants require a minimum TOEFL score of 213.

The nine credit courses in this 700-hour program can be completed in one Admission year (September - May). To allow students more flexibility, the program offers three of its courses by correspondence.
