International Tests Now Available at Algonquin College

Algonquin’s Language Institute is now an official test site for an internationally recognized English language assessment test known as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). TOEFL measures the ability of nonnative speakers of English to use and understand English as it is spoken, written, and heard in college and university settings. Demand for this test is high in the Ottawa area and having Algonquin College as a site means fewer people will need to go to Montreal or Kingston. TOEFL scores are accepted by more than 6,000 colleges, universities and licensing agencies in 110 countries.

Registration details are found at www.ets.org/toefl and many helpful resources such as the Web Resource Guide where you can try a practice test online, join discussion boards and discover study tips.

This internet- based version of TOEFL (iBT) is the most recent to be added to the Language Institute's list of standardized tests.

Additional tests provided to specific groups at the Language Institute include:

CLBPT – Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test - which is the test being used in this college as part of the CIITE research project for language assessment; it is becoming the English-Second Language test of choice by federally and provincially funded projects; within the college, it is being used by Health Studies to assess English language skills of internationally trained immigrants/newcomers (COMP and ACE IT projects)

GPT - General Proficiency Test - is an in-house language test used to determine placement of immigrant and Canadian citizens into the ESL intensive program; it provides smooth transition from LINC 6/7 Bridging into the ESL intensive program.

TOEIC- Test of English for International Communication - which is the placement test for international students into the English as a Second Language (ESL) intensive program.

TFI - Test de Français International - Algonquin College has been an official site for this test since the Winter semester of 2006. This test is being held all year round, in March, April, June, July, August, September and November.

A placement test is required for ALL levels of ESL and FSL training except Beginner A French. Results from your placement test will determine your starting level. Each semester you will progress to the most appropriate level for your needs and abilities.
